Pull this into photoshop or the GIMP if you don't believe it.

Wow, really amazing!

Wow. I didn't believe it, so I pulled it into Photoshop. The human brain is full of crap.

Now I know why I struggle so much to clone dust spots off what looks like a plain background.

It's the first thing I did. Pulled it into the GIMP and compared. Even after showing they're the same, I still have trouble seeing it in the actual image.

OMG, very cool! :)

I tried half closing/narrowing my eyes but it's so hard to tell they are the same, but they definitely are!

That is one of the most effective illusions of all time. You simply don't believe it until you prove it to yourself.

The worst of it is: no matter how hard you force your brain to see that they are the same after you have proved it to yourself, it just doesn't happen.

just goes to show how much of reality is perception.

our brains only gather a small part of what our eyes see and interprets the rest.

Wow... Usually with an illusion, after you know the answer, you can see it. I still swear that it isn't, even after bringing it into Photoshop. So I printed it out and cut it out. (knowing of course that it's true... but still...)

Freaky...

Heh, I did the same thing, but just folded it. :-D

I just turned my phone flat and they are the same. The other tones shift also. Strange!

Similar Illusion

if this were a painting site, most of you would be very familiar with this illusion. You can create similar effects with color as well. Everything is defined by what's next to it.

It's the same with humans - that's where they came up with the phrase "guilt by association" :P

Our brains are wired to rely on shadows to help create a reality of what we see, even if it is not true. I love these sort of illusions. Thanks for posting.
