I have a meeting with the tourism board this week as they would like to purchase the rights to a couple of my photographs, the problem is, I have no idea what to charge them. Can anyone give me an idea what the going rate for exclusive rights are??

I think a lot of it will depend on where you live, for instance, in NYC the price would be much higher than it would be in Billings, Montana. I would check with some other local photographers and find out if they sell exclusive rights to any of their shots and for how much.

OR...would it be better to sell one time use and retain the rights? If so, what would I charge for that??

Hey Dave

I always find lots of good information at the NPPA website (National Press Photographers Assoc). Here is a direct link to a reference in their Business Practices Guide pricing page

Hope thats somewhat helpfull... and good job with the sale!

Dave,

There are soooo may variables to consider. Pricing can vary from "almost nothing" to hunders of dollars for a single image. I have used a computer program in the past which does a great job of establishing prices, but found that there was still a lot of wriggle room. I am not associated with them in any way, but do think it was an excellent (but not inexpensive - over $100) program. See www.fotoquote.com.

Another approach is to "pretend" like you were a buyer and see what various stock agencies charge for similar images.

Goo luck.
