When you shoot in low light at f1.4 you get a greater DOF which you would not be able to get with FF when shooting without flash.

I understand f1.4 on m43 looses two stops of DOF compared to FF = f2.8
So if you compare it to say a APSC camera does that mean it would loose only one stop = f2.0?

that not much of a plus though, shooting with my 5d mkii 50mm 1.4 i want greater depth of field i role the wheel rd a bit 2 / 2.8 there i go, you want shallower dof you are stuck at 2.8....

Plus those primes sharpen up quite a bit on FF at comparable DOFs becuase they are stopped down. My 50/1.4 is a completely different lens at 2.8 than it is at 1.4.

good discussion!

I thought about upgrading to further and leaning more towards 6D then only piece that would hit me back is max shutter speed which is 1/4000 where as my 50D has 1/8000 though rest of the 6D features are very up then my 50D including FF. About shutter speed not sure when did I ever reach to 1/8000 so may be shutter speed I might ignore. Anything else that you see that I am missing primarily between 50D to 6D upgrade.

A question on top of this!

I have 580EX II flash, does 6D have remote trigger to fire flash off camera? I think 7D does have but not sure.

The 6D uses SD cards only, so that might be a consideration if you have a big investment in CF cards.

The 7D can trigger a 580ex II wirelessly with its built-in flash, but the 6D does not have a built-in flash.

Thanks Shannon!

Another question! does kit lens same as what is getting sold individually?

6D with kit lens I see it comes with EF24-105mm IS and the camera cost is US $2699 now if I do a separate purchase then lens itself costs me $1091 and Camera is $2099, so was getting confused whether the Kit lens is same as individual lens.

Camera with Kit Lens

body only

Just lens

It is the same lens. They just give a heavy discount on it with the purchase of the body.

The discount is enough that you can order the bundled kit and sell the lens separately to save several hundred on the body.

I lost $2800 just now means I just ordered the kit and will follow what you said ;)

I will share some of the pictures once I get hold of it!

You did not loose anything but I will be bugging you with tones of questions!

Well done!

The bundled lens costs you an extra $600, and sells for over $800 new on eBay. For the small inconvenience of listing and shipping a lens, you just bought a $200 discount.

listing a lens on a forum site such as photography on the net or Fred Miranda or even here. You avoid listing fees and generally get a higher premium on lenses. ebay whacks you for high ticket items.

I am reading and reading and I am coming to the conclusion that the 6D might be a better choice over a 5DMK2. If the price is right.

Some thoughts:

1) 1/8000 vs 1/4000 I can not remember one instance I needed this (on my departed 40D). OK, my Oly EPL1 is limited to 1/2000 and with a 1.4 Lens mounted there were instances, but that was 1/2000
2) A large collection of CF cards. That doesn't make a lot of sense for me even though I have 2-3 CF cards from 4G to 8G. SD's are affordable and most of the modern laptops come with a build in SD card reader.
3) 1/200 flash sync vs 1/180. Not an expert so I can see a big difference.
4) Viewfinder 98% v 97% almost the same

On the other hand (not yet proven though) the 6D is better at higher ISO, better focus, higher frame rate. Is lighter and smaller (I do love hiking and trail running - here the OLY OMD EM5 winks at me)

Not having any suitable lens for FF I think that 24-105 F4 is an awesome value.

So what else 5DMK2 can do and 6D doesn't?

Magic Lantern doesn't work on the 6D, but I've only really found it useful for video work, and there is always a chance they will port it to the 6D. But for video, I couldn't put a price on the zebra striping feature. My video's would never be in focus without it.

I don't know about the Magic Lantern. I watched the link and I guess that it will be out for 6D as well.

Meanwhile I just got back form a shop where I could put me hands on the 6D. They did not let me use me on SD card (...fair enough).

Feelings:

1) It's small and light. So small and light that almost did not feel good. No i understand why is called entry level. However, I started form the EOS350D so there should be no limitations related to this. I note that my 40D felt more "pro" form this point of view.
2) The camera was mounted with a 50/F1.8 so there was some hunting and the lack of USM did not allow me to have a real feeling of he AF
3) The camera was set on some kind of WB so the pics were orange. When I wanted to change I could not find the WB button (as on 40D). But that because there is no button and you have to do it looking at the LCD in the menu. No big deal
4) The lack of the joystick did not bother me and the changing of the AF point was ok. With a combination of the 2 wheels and the 8 direction pad was ok I would say.
5) All the buttons are on one side and seemed somehow crammed but I can not say 100%. Might be the muscle memory of me fingers set on the 40D
6) The weather sealing on the SD slot was not much; more like a thicker foam.
7) The DOF button is unusually placed but its there.
8) The LCD looked awesome (compared to 40D)
9) The Kit was not in stock and required 1 month (I am currently in Asia)
10) ...

Can not draw a conclusion, just wanted to share.

Cheers

PS found some pics on a HK site (sorry only Chinese) scroll down for links to some original files marked "Ori".

you seem to be echoing the sentiment of most i read. the 6D is a nice camera provided you can get past the smaller size. compared to the 5d2 its a toss up whether to the new features (wifi, gps, weather sealing) are worth it over what you are compromising (sync speed, 1/800 max shutter, larger balanced body).

if they were the same price this would be an easy decision, but the 5d2 will always be a few hundred cheaper and for all intents and purposes still holds it own against the 6D.

you are going to be happy with either.

one thing to keep in mind is if you use Lightroom, its doesn't yet support the RAW of the 6D and from what I hear it inst in the next scheduled update, you may need to wait until march.

Keeping release date and time in mind yes I understand none of the new features will be available in any third part software but is that a show stopper may be not. I always wanted to try new first I bought 50D when it came out and yes I did have same software issue at that time but it worked out well after waiting for few months. I guess it should be ok as long as the software gets support for the new format :)

On top I guess I may not be able to submit to any challenge because I dont see 6D in the camera list :)

Your camera doesn't need to be listed to submit. But you can request that it be added. Go to Help>Contact Us, select the Equipment Addition/Change option and type your request.

FYI– You can get a new 5D Mark III with full US warranty for $2600 shipped.

There will be a free firmware update for the 5D III in April that enables uncompressed HDMI output and f/8 autofocus with teleconverters.
