Seems like everything is being re-made into magnetic doohickies these days. With all these high-strength neodymium magnet doodads floating around, why aren't I hearing about computer/tablet/smartphone problems?

Solid-State memory.

Spinning platters hate magnets and movements..

Since tablets/smartphones need to be more stable, and since Solid-State memory is now becoming cheaper and more available in general, along with being faster and smaller, along with being more resilient, it's the natural choice even for laptops and desktops too - as a result we can now use nifty neodymium magnets on our crap without fear.

I posit that the proliferation of these magnetic novelties will be the cause of the reversal of the earth's magnetic poles, thereby ushering in the 2012 apocalypse. It's an exciting time.

The reversal of the poles is a real effect. I did research on this topic around a decade ago.

Computer hard drives are now shielded against magnetism. I can remember all the warning about magnets but that has pretty much gone away

TEN YEARS and you haven't tried to stop this madness? You are part of the problem, my friend. :P

Cool ! Magnetic nick-nacks for everyone this xmas !

I've seen some prepper tv shows claiming that a pole reversal will doom us all. I think that if we live long enough to witness one, it won't have any effect other than forcing us all to re-label our compasses. :-D

Those neodymium magnets can be hazardous! I was goofing around with a couple of small ones and ended up with them pinching my eyebrow. That hurt like a mofo! I was panicking trying to get the dang things off and my wife was laughing her arse off.

Earth's Inconstant Magnetic Field
Originally posted by Linked Article:

Every few years, scientist Larry Newitt of the Geological Survey of Canada goes hunting. He grabs his gloves, parka, a fancy compass, hops on a plane and flies out over the Canadian arctic. Not much stirs among the scattered islands and sea ice, but Newitt's prey is there--always moving, shifting, elusive.

His quarry is Earth's north magnetic pole.

At the moment it's located in northern Canada, about 600 km from the nearest town: Resolute Bay, population 300, where a popular T-shirt reads "Resolute Bay isn't the end of the world, but you can see it from here." Newitt stops there for snacks and supplies--and refuge when the weather gets bad. "Which is often," he says.

I've seen a pair of 1" cubes break a finger.

You should get yourself some magnetic ferrofluid for christmas.

Sometimes a wife with a little less arse is a good thing.

Yeah! I hear it's pretty messy, though.
