Not that I have any idea how to use the darn thing or anything.....
I'm going to be up against a heck of a learning curve, methinks. The only FX lens I have is my 105mmf/2.8. It looks like at wide open, it's even touchier than my crop-sensor cameras. I'm looking to get a 28-300 SOON!!!
It's pretty much exactly the same size & weight as my D7000, and that almost makes it small for my hands.
I do want to actually break down and get some of the serious glass that'll let me see just how good this full frame stuff really is.....
For those like me who aren't too bright about lens choices in the past, this camera will accommodate the DX lenses. It has an auto-recognize feature. So I'm not totally screwed! LOL!!!
We'll see how this goes.
BTW.......all y'all who were looking for intelligent insight, too bad about your luck. I pretty much grope in the dark with technology.

Congrats Jeb!
As a Nikonian, yep, you're a little better off than we are on the Canon side. At least the DX lenses can mount and be used, albeit in a less-than-desirable way. You should look at getting a good, fast 50mm prime, IMO. It's a great way to get re-acclimated to 35mm. I remember when I stepped off that precipice, actually on this very day seven years ago (!). I had a 50/1.4 prime as my only real fast lens. I quickly supplemented that with the 24/1.4 after seeing the incredible narrow-DoF results from the 50mm!

Oh soo excited to see you get this Jeb!! Keep me up on what you think... I've been thinking about getting one... the D90 body fits my small hands soooo nicely, I've heard the body on these are smallerish, ie not like the D700 or other fullframe cameras... Be excited to follow your opinions of the camera!! |

Congratulations!
I bought all the FX glass (except a new wide) last year in anticipation of going full frame. The Nikon 70-200 Vr II is an amazing lens. My favorite except for being too long range (and heavy) on my D7000. The 24-70 is great too, though I wish it had VR for my shaky hands. And I even bought and use the 28-300 when the 18-200 is not enough on my D7000. Also very good.
The hard part is the WIDE end. Other than the 14-24 which is $2000 and HEAVY, there aren't many good choices. (The 16-35 is supposed to be a great lens, but also VERY HEAVY.) And I like my Sigma 10-20, which is sharp and light. That's made me think twice about full frame (not to mention a 36 MP sensor on the D800).
But I have my eye on the D600 too. I am anxious for more reviews...and more pix...post some!

Be aware that you can turn off the auto crop mode on all the Nikon FX cameras that I know of (don't know much about the D600 but it should hold true, too). Some lenses will show heavy vignette, some will not. Shooting them wide open will decrease this effect, and changing the zoom often will alter the degree to which they vignette, as well. I use my DX Sigma 30 1.4 on my film camera to great result- same premise as disabling the auto-crop feature on a digital.
Here are some examples of somebody who has done this- 35 1.8 on a FX sensor
Strobist enjoys using that same lens, specifically for the type of effect is has on the photo- Strobist sky shot at the top taken with 35 1.8
He's got another post where he uses it specifically by choice, or maybe it's on his dvd set... anyway, I can't find another one from him, but you get the idea.
Experiment with your lenses, you might like the outcome they provide.

Okay.....so now that I have this darn camera, I just had to buy an FX walkaround lens, ya know.....
I hate when that happens......NOT!!!
I got the 28-300. Here's a couple shots.

Playing around to get my "new" default settings dialed in.......ISO Auto-Spider @1250, Redux @2000
I doinked with the levels and a little sharpening....... Did crop both by about 50%.
Okay.....A couple of impressions. Yeah, I'm a big guy. I had to get a battery grip so this camera wouldn't feel like it's falling out of my hand. The D600 is small and light. The battery grip doesn't add too much.
HOWEVER.......this 28-300 lens feels like someone strapped a cinder block to my camera. It's HEAVY. I don't mind, but I would think anyone considering this lens should make it a point to feel the weight on the body of their choice.
One think that has me dancing is the dial lock. FINALLY, I don't have to check to make sure where I'm set at with the stupid dial that gets bumped to Auto if you look at it wrong.
Single biggest improvement Nikon's made in years! LOL!!!
Anyway.....I'll prolly post here randomly for a while just in case anyone's interested in my musings.

Nice! I kind of had a feeling this camera would be small and light. I have a feeling the Canon 6D will be the same way. Does it feel sturdy or does it feel cheap? |

It feels good. Solid. Very much like my D7000.

I finally couldn't hold out any longer...went on a pretty good sale last week, so I bought one!
I bought it with the kit lens 24-85 just to give me a lighter VR alternative to my 24-70 and 28-300. Some test shots in the house and I was having second thoughts about the lens. But I went and shot with the camera and it this weekend and I was very pleased with it's fast and accurate focus, and lightweight style. At one point I put on my 28-300 to get more reach and I was surprised how much more slowly it focused (not to mention weighing more than a ton of bricks).
