If you really want the site to disappear, this would do it. Servers and bandwidth are not free. If Langdon lost his revenue stream, the site it toast. |

Exactly, so maintain the relationships which provide the revenue stream then those relationships will feel good about being revenue streams and then he would use that revenue stream to find smarter ways to maintain the relationships and new relationships view this as cool and they then too would help sustain the revenue stream and ... and ... and ....
This is business 101.

ROFL!!! NOTHING is perfect :-)
Honestly "Spork", I choose my battles. Clearly, these "promises" (whichever they may be) are infinitely more important to you than they are to me, and represent some sort of monetary value to you, which they do not, to me. You do not think I care? Perhaps you have not been reading closely enough to see the suggestions I HAVE made, which are doable, right now, without further fuss or intervention from Langdon, and which would vastly improve the "community". To me, the value at DPC is not in the coding. |
If they represented simply monetary value, I'd be asking for a refund. My apologies if expecting people to follow through on things they've promised to do is so horrible.
Originally posted by tanguera: A a completely separate observation, for one who professes to value "community" as much as you say, it's interesting to note that you won't even share your first name. |
It's also interesting to note that there are people willing to simply attack me for disagreeing with them or others who would take information that's online and use that for illegal gain. Online, publicly my name "is" Spork and that is enough. Or perhaps to show that I value "community" I should post my name, address, phone number and SSN or why not just put my credit card #'s and passwords on my profile page too so I can have more death threat phone calls and even more fun with ID theft?

What has this thread achieved? Has Langdon read it? Does he know this site is worth at least 3x annual revenue he gets? Why doesn't he put it out for sale and get some money for it? Why have an asset and let its worth dwindle away? |

For what reason? What's the motivation? Why on any level should Langdon remotely consider your thoughts? Because you harangue him repeatedly?
You seem to suggest that he either doesn't know what he's doing, doesn't treat the site properly, isn't doing much of anything right....
Hello? Where's your site? You know, the one YOU started ten years ago and still have a happy base even if it's running on autopilot.
You're so freakin' smart, YOU start and run that better site the way you know it should be done.
You do nothing but complain.....nothing. Why would anyone have the remotest interest in what you want. Especially the owner of a site that you constantly and resoundingly thrash. |

Quick and dirty numbers suggest the site is worth $30-35,000. Used to be worth lots more.
This means nothing unless he is willing to sell.
A way to spark attention may be to have a receiving site readied which mimmicks this environment as there is little proprietary technology worth defending here. As far as I understand, members are not bound by a non-comp or non-solicitation agreement. Langdon retains rights to a library of images but not to the membership itself. The key is to offer the community a place where it can stay whole. If you look at it, the membership pays its dues to maintain the community. The site is just an environment that can be replaced much easier than the community.
Expect some push back but hey, the formula seems to work does it not?
Oh yeah, don't forget to tap your staff 3 times on the rock though before "parting" ways. ;-) |

I am prepared to put 20 years worth of membership fee towards the purchase, anyone else would like to buy it out of Langdon? These days hosting with large space and big bandwidth is not expensive so the highest cost would be to refresh and to manage this site. But there are many volunteers here who would do it for free so what is stopping us from buying it out?? If it matters so much to you why not take control? Make it your own? |

Do the advertisers pay to place their adds on the site?......the ones non-paying people get to see.

Yes, there are Google ads I can see in a different browser when I log out. I don't know how much this site would earn but it adds up a bit to the revenue. There is also the sale of prints and extra charge for additional space. |

Do you realize that it is possible, even in this profit-obsessed world, that there are other motivations for doing things? And that you may be all set to buy, but that he has no intention of selling? Why don't you communicate your interest directly to him and work it out in private, instead of insisting on stirring everyone into village-burning mode. I'm serious. Contact him about this desire of yours and work it out with him. In private. Please.
Spork, no one is "attacking" you. Speaking for myself, I am addressing each of your points directly. I have not used offensive language, nor spoken poorly of you. As someone who seems to prefer provocative language, and "unsoftened" discourse, you are awfully quick to cry wolf. In the normal course of social exchange, people give each other their names. That's it. Sorry to hear about your death threats. As such, I'd advise against posting your SS# online.

Yes, having a pet project that earns money while doing nothing at all. |

And that is clearly what this is to him. It's his pet, even if he's not playing with it. Why can't you respect that? |
