I have been a member since 2004 and generally go through ebbs and flows with this site and for some reason I feel drawn back to it right now. I have to admit that all this negativity has me down a bit, so I want to offer a challenge to every single person who comes to this site on the regular. It's a very simple challenge, but could really make a huge difference. You ready?

Spread the word. It's that simple.

For the next two weeks I am going to tell at least one person every day about DPC. I work with a ton of people who want to be better photographers and I always tell them about this site, but I am really going to push it for the next two weeks. I am going to make them visit the site, sign up, and introduce themselves. I care about this site and I am going to prove it! Heck, I am going to hang up flyers at my work in the breakrooms! I may even put some in the stalls so people can learn about DPC while they're pooping! That is how dedicated I am!

Who's with me!?!

I do too, but I am going to really push it for two weeks! My goal is to get at least 10 people to sign up.

I once got this weirdo Marine to sign up and he has done fairly well here...

I've almost told many people about this place, but then one of the voices in my head says "No! They must never, ever know!"
I'll try to reason with it or sneak the word out.

There is no way, NO WAY AT ALL that I would want to subject anyone in my family and my friends to what DPC is!

I am going door to door with pamphlets and leaflets.

...I should probably wait til later in the morning though - that's what the first three neighbors told me anyway. The fourth just shot at me. This is a difficult challenge. :/

To date I haven't had much success with trying to infect others with my enthusiasm, but I'll give it my best shot.

this is a good idea, something that i do all the time.

one thing you have to keep in mind is that you have to treat your effort with the same mentality that you have when entering a challenge: don't expect anything and don't take your results personally.

even though this is a photography-centric site, the challenges are not going to be everyone's cup of tea, especially when people either don't get comments or don't like the ones they do get. the forums may be useful and may foster community, but they might not sit well with everyone.

all you can do is keep pointing people here and sharing the good stuff, support those that do stick their foot in the water, and don't worry about those who either won't dive in or immediately climb out...

This is a great idea. Sometimes I put DPC in my comments for Flickr images, but not as often as I should. From now I, I will make my best effort to mention DPC whenever I post a challenge entry to Flickr (as long as the voting is complete).

I may also look to start or participate in a photography club at work, and get the word out that way.

I got my sister npasel to sign up a few years back.

What's funny is that I actually joined on the advice of someone that only entered two contests, wasn't happy with their feedback and left. I looked up his account, agreed with the feedback and joined a few days later. I try to mention it whenever the subject of improving photography comes up. I told some random person at the framing counter about it in Michael's last week. I can keep doing that ... no problemo!

I think that's the main problem, people can't handle honest criticism.

There are two main kinds offered here; technical and opinions. I welcome both. There is always room for improvement on the technical side of things; composition, contrast, lighting, editing, that it never ends. On the opinion side, I like knowing if someone thinks water drops are over done and that's why they vote down my shot. Or that my photo didn't meet the challenge from their perspective. Or my titles suck. Or whatever.

If you ever go to sell photos, the later category is what you'll hear more often for feedback. Most people don't care about the technical side of things, only what the image represents to them.

Hi, I am Chuck and I love photography. I admire photographers that have the ability to catch everything perfect to capture a moment in time and keep it forever. I enjoy this site and my goal is to become more educated on taking pictures and enjoy the talents of others that come here. I also wear purple shirts, run really fast and have fuzz in my belly button. :-)

Okay Chuck, when I said introduce yourself I didn't mean to go that far...
