Hey all
I've just bought a new laptop is doing my freakin head in. Basically, the graphics are completely rubbish and even when viewing photos, the colours/resolution etc are way out.
It's difficult to explain, so I've uploaded a couple of photos to my Flickr account for illustration purposes.
Here
See the two photos in that set. It’s not as bad as the one called ‘Laptop’ (I had to manually create a poorer version through MS Paint for illustration purposes)... but it’s somewhere in between the two versions of the photo. i.e. its as if the colour palette on the computer doesn’t have enough variations to accurately represent all pixels, and therefore just substitutes the closest one. As I say, it’s not as dramatic as the doctored copy... but is annoying. It’s most apparent in the brunettes hair... and the blondes jeans.
The graphics unit is Intel HD Graphics 4000 which obviously should be good enough. I tried updating the drivers, but it didn̢۪t solve the problem. I also set the laptop resolution to it̢۪s standard recommended settings (and I tried all others just to make sure), and that hasn̢۪t made any difference either. I̢۪m getting very frustrated.
When I put my new and old laptops side by side, and look at the same image on a website... the new laptop just displays a much poorer quality image. Not just worse... but actually so poor that any photo looks bad!
Anyone got any ideas?

| Check you've got your colour depth settings set to maximum. |

| If its win 7 or 8 do a search on "display settings" and walk through the wizard to see if it changes anything... |

i wouldnt deal with that on a new purchase - if it is, i agree with ART.
If thats not the case, I had a similar effect show up on one of my old PCs when my gfx card failed and had to be replaced. I'd look into reinstalling the gfx drivers as a step 1 troubleshoot. This doesn't look like regular ol' gradiation issues you sometimes get by abusing curves and similar tools.
I would return it for a model that works out of box if at all possible |

First, bring up the graphics properties and look at the color depth setting. As JH posted, make sure it's set to maximum, (I believe that is 32-bit). If it is not, change it and see if that solves the issue.
If it does not, or if it is already set to maximum, it may well be a hardware problem. In any case, this is not something you should see out-of-the-box. If you bought it locally, there is no harm at all in asking the retailer to either make it right or exchange it. |
