I was thinking that it would be a good idea to go to a small local sports event (rugby, soccer, baseball, etc) and take some nice shots, and then send samples or a thumbnail sheet to the club to see if anyone wants to buy the prints.

Does anyone do this? If so, do people tend to buy anything?

its a huge business in travel hockey. My brother plays both travel ice and roller hockey. Every tournament has a photog shoot every game, load the shots to a comp, and shows everyone after the game. Pretty good business. 8x10s go for 15 bucks. Once, when we traveled to atlanta for a tornament the photographer let me use his canon 1d with a 80-200 2.8L lens for 2 games, and burnt about 600 of my images to a CD.
