beautiful and challenge requirement may not go hand in hand ;O)

yeah you;ve mentioned that 3 times now, get over it

voice noted, twice but whos counting right ;O) and maybe it needed repeating... and at least you were paying some attention :O)

This kind of discussions would be much more useful at the end of the challenge...

there is also plenty of bitch threads about the state of dpc and if you're leaving or not but that doesn't seem to be stopping anyone

I predict a 4.891 in the end.
I wasn't thrilled with my shot and neither are the voters.

ooooohhhhhhh... there's a lot of talk of "grouping images" in this thread!!!
tsk tsk people.
aren't we violating rules by casting bias by grouping those images that are not portraying high contrast???

I shot for it!! (I actually kind of shot for it 3 times)

But I really shot for it a couple of hours before rollover.

I was even done a couple of hours before roll over.

I just was tired, over done after a stupid week, brain not engaged.

And I forgot to enter it!

Poop.

I really liked the shot. :(

edited to add, I would have even been happier with the 3s that are going around that not having it in all week. :(

Don't fret. Just keep it in mind for High Contrast VI, next week.

Yeah Lol ;-------------------------------------- )

hahahahahahaah!!!

Mine falls into this category and my 5.1 score reflects this fact. No explanation on how I got it wrong other than confusion (and a last minute decision to enter and a last minute entry). On the plus side, it could have made a pretty fair low key entry!

Oh well, just keep plugging away.

True statement, however there is no such thing as a "challenge requirement" at DPC. They challenges are stated and people are free to enter whatever they wish. I have seen landscapes entered into "portrait" challenges. The reason DPC does this is simple. Every artist here has the right to choose what their personal interpretation of a challenge means to them, and shoot to that interpretation. When it comes to something like a "technique" challenge I have been stunned by the diversity of the challenge as many folks have had different educations about what constitutes a particular technique and what does not. If a large enough group of people feel that a specific shot violates the challenge guidelines then the photo will typically not score well. Oh and here is something interesting to add - Notice how the challenge just says "high contrast" not "use a high contrast technique in your photo". . . I have seen this argument about seven hundred times in the last six or so years I've been a member of the site.

When it comes to leaving, I hope NEAT does not leave. I know what it is like to have a beloved image get hammered, and it feels like "poo". However, I may take a break when I am fed up with some of the things around here, I still come back to play, because all things even this site has some of the better challenge entries.

To an extent. Check out the euphemism challenge. Over 50% of the entries aren't euphemisms. Voters clearly didn't care. Makes it really annoying when you shoot for the challenge only to realize it's irrelevant.

I need some cheese to go with my whine. At least one person liked it, however. Thanks.

Shoehorn's have existed since the first challenges on DPC. If you don't believe me go and look through the archives. LOL. However, I have to be careful that my understanding of the challenge does not become the basis for assaulting other entries. That said, I think you will find that in the majority, it does not pay to step against the grain of the challenge. Most photos that do, end up scoring poorly in the long run. If the photo does not score poorly, that is when --after the challenge-- I start asking other members what they think, and very often I find out that the photo in question met the challenge in some way I was not thinking of. . .

Meh!........

Between 22 and 33 votes dropped from possible profile page contender almost to tiny violin! I'm sorry that so many people are getting crushed with (apparently) harsh low votes... But I think it has been said before that the voting in open challenges has a habit of looking capricious (whether an accurate assessment or not).

It can be low key (or high key) AND high contrast, right?

I entered. When I checked, the score was approaching that magic "meh" number of 5.5. Yay!

Not.

What I said stands, I was looking for a way out anyway, my photography website for my business went up last night, so I will be busy with that. I might enter the odd challenge, if time permits, and is interesting enough, but not full on like I have for the past two and a bit years, it's been mostly fun, I say mostly b/c a lot of the times have been frustrating! But I'm not here to please anyone anymore, must stop doing that, I now have to please my customers, who actually want to pay me.........lol!!!

Score got up to 5.90 last night, now a meh 5.64 - 'ce la vie' must be a meh shot~~

Woot. NICE! With all the 4.0 somethings I had heard it is good to see someone scoring well on the challenge.

I can't tell you the number of times that I have had a photo doing well (for me) or poorly (once again-for me), only to have the 2nd to 7th days blow it completely away from my initial expectations. : ) Best of luck!

i see your points and while i can agree with some of it, i dont think since being part of the site that in all challenges it is the case. just my personal view. High Contrast is High Contrast it is what it is. Interpretation of something that has been defined is not the same. i see a lot of low contrast images in this challenge and i can see from my own images scores that a lot of people do not know the difference. i stand by that. im not wishing to offend or upset anyone i much prefer to give constructive criticism or empower people to do better and enjoy, but seeing anyones photo who deserves better get low scores when others are not really interpreting the challenge correctly is sad to see, because it does put people off entering in my opinion.. anyway... have a great day im not singuling anyone out and its not about negativity its about trying to educate others i think? so that we all feel like the site is much more balanced?
