I got my new macro lens this morning, Canon 50mm f/2.5.
I'm really happy with it. It's very very sharp:
100% crop - unedited 300D full auto mode
And the DoF is niiiice and shallow, although it's hard getting used to the shallowness:

Cool! Congrats on the new glass Ben, I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. Watch out, macro photography is awfully addictive.

Beautiful lens I have heard :)
I have the 100mm f2.8 version. It is my favourite lens by far .... and also the only prime lens I have, which I guess does make it the sharpest.
Look forward to seeing what you produce with it :)
I have my new lens arriving this weekend, the Canon 100-400mm L USM IS one, which I can not wait to play with! I just wish UPS would call me to arrange delivery, as I can see it on their wen site sitting at customs waiting clearance!

No kidding about macro being addictive -- I recently got a set of Kenko extension tubes. I've been tinkering around with the 50mm 1.8 and the various lengths of extension -- man, does it ever shorten the DOF! Nice magnification tho -- the instructions claim 1.4x lifesize with all three stacked up under a 50mm lens. The camera has to be incredibly close to the subject, also... now I understand the necessity of those track gizmos for shifting the whole camera instead of focusing.
I haven't tried it with other lenses yet. I bet on wide end of the 28-80 it'll be very useful macro for flowers. |
