I didn't realize that when shooting in RAW only, and having my camera set to monochrome/b&w...
when transferring images from SD card to computer, images would be in color.
interesting.
I was going to do a personal 30 days of B&W... but it transferred to color.
good to know for future uses. :) |

If you use a free and simpleand free program like fast stone viewer, you can see and save your raw images in Jpeg BW files.
When I shoot in BW I use RAW + Jpeg settings. |

Odd, when I set my picture style to b/w, I see the preview of my RAW images in the chosen picture style. Probably because I am using Canon's RAW software, which goes according to those settings. I don't think other software uses Canon's picture styles as the default.

The preview on my camera was B&W... but when pulling off the SD card to computer (just opening the folder and pulling to desktop folder) they were color.
I'm not complaining... at all.
I actually thought it was cool.
this shows me what they would look like in black and white before viewing color...
which I really liked.
BTW: not sure which raw conversion software I use... PS I think???

The imbedded JPG inside the RAW file uses the camera settings (B&W in this case but for colour it's the picture style set). If your software just grabs the imbedded JPG for display you see what was shot (and what was on the back of your camera). Some RAW software - lightroom for example - shows the imbedded image while it builds it's own preview... which is colour since it's built from the RAW which captures the colour info. This is why a lot of people complain about LR by the way.... The image looked good then it changed... it's the settings in LR to generate the preview while thye initial display is the baked in JPG. I believe the histogram is set from that imbedded JPG as well but not 100% sure - I cannot see how else it would do that.
Can be cool... I use B&W a fair bit on the camera because it's easier for me to image the scene in B&W but I know I have the full colour from the RAW file. |
