I'm not getting into this thread, but holy crap has voting ever slowed to a crawl recently. Just an observation.

Right I know the OP was referring to the mathematical effect, but IMO there is no question that we need more voters, whatever the reason... and with so few entries, I'm still wondering what the reasoning.

This is the more important thing to squabble over.

Which has more / less effect when voting in challenges - a low vote or a missed vote?

Low votes have a direct effect on your score. Missed votes do not. I would be more worried about total votes in general. In the Deja Vu challenge the average was around 90-94 votes received. That's really low, IMO. Scores tend to stabilize right around the 100 vote mark and for many in that challenge they didn't even reach that. What happens if we start getting challenges with 70 or 50 votes across the board? We'll be awarding ribbons to photos that may not have even placed in the top 5 had they received 10 more votes.

In the Deja Vu challenge, to properly assess an entry the voter had to know what was being emulated. This took a LOT of time so it's no wonder the vote was low (and with some entries an original couldn't be identified anyway). If we want more voting participation I'd advise steering clear of this type of challenge.

Pretty weak concession to bassbone, but it's noted.

I was actually attempting to encourage people to vote 100% regardless of whether they have previewed images pre-challenge. I was hoping that a response of 'a non-vote may effect placement and/or score' would encourage everyone to vote on ALL images (and hopefully increase the number of votes received per challenge) when they realised that they may be adversely effecting somebody's score/placement by the simple act of NOT casting the score.

Does that even make sense? :)

Clearly the reason for not voting on images you've seen prior to challenge start is (at least in most cases) to stop bias creeping in to your voting - which can affect somebodies score/placement just as much as not voting on said images.
