since being at DPC, any time I look at photographs, in magazines, newspapers, on the net... I notice the flaws. Especially things like haloing, tilted horizons, blown highlights, and focus issues. before joining, these things didn't seem to affect me... now, I spot them everywhere!
and my photos are no exception. LOL. |

Welcome to the dark side of photo-snobism.
You will also find it increasingly difficult to pretend to like all the umm.. crappy photos that people will try to show off to you because they know you are into photography. |

I've had to force myself to be non-critical of 'great' family snapshots. I've gotten in trouble in the past for pointing out lighting and focus issues.
It's easier just to say 'yeah, that's a great photo. Why don't you go ahead and blow it up to A3 poster size?' |

this is why i hate instagram. i hate when people take a crappy cellphone pictures and apply a style to it, now its a crappy work of art.
all the comments are wow, did you take that, its awesome.
meanwhile i can see all the flaws in it, noise, out of focus, composition sucks, etc, but i should be saying hey, its got fancy split toning, it must be great! |

Come on now, we need to be encouraging. Find the good things. I think DPC has made us all hypercritical. But then again, this also shows us why a mediocre entry on DPC will have your family and friends wowing about how you missed your calling to work for national geographic (based on a set of zoo photos).

If I had a dime for every time I was told "Hey, you should send those to national geographic!"... ha!

To take it up a step...I notice that I even watch movies that way now. I really notice the lighting and comp of a scene. Even some movies I've seen a bunch of times...I now look at them differently. |

Totally. When I start critiquing the lighting on sitcoms, I know it's time to turn the TV off. |

Spiff's right. DPC has made us all hypercritical, which is good in a way, because it helps me improve my own work. But when my friends are sending me their instagrammed snapshots, I have to just appreciate them for what they are, not for what I would make them if it were my own work. |

Absolutely! You should HEAR the back-and-forth between PennyClick and me while we're watching movies of an evening... |

I'm familiar with a Foley Stage, and my mom ran a looping business, so I'm always paying attention to the sound as well as the visuals ... |

I do the same thing but it is more admiring really well done cinematography instead of seeing the flaws. Now photos, I often see the flaws and now my parents are getting the same way even never having taken a photo. |
