| I thought this was a thing of the past, but today I noticed the faintest burn-in on my ipad of the safari boxes where you have websites and search. Anybody else notice this? |

| I have 2 iPad 1's (since May 2010) that the kids use a few hours every day. Can't see anything on them. |

In fringe cases, however, LCDs have been known to have some slight image retention. Image retention, as a rule, is not permanent. If your iPad is suffering from image retention, which I doubt, keeping it off for 24-48 hours should solve the problem.
Unless you're keeping the iPad on a static screen for days/weeks at a time, my guess is that you're experiencing a defect with the panel. I personally keep my iPhone on for 12+ hours as a time because I use it every night as a bedside clock. Never have I experienced even the faintest image retention.
I'd take it back to Apple. They'll replace it for you.

| Aloe vera gel is really good for soothing burns. |

Maybe the burn-in is on your retinas ?

| Giles, I found the same thread, and I think it explains what I am seeing. I guess "burn in" is really the wrong term, but rather "ghosting" where bright areas may retain some of their brightness when they are switched to a gray background. I guess it's somewhat "normal". I'm not too worried about it as long as it isn't an early sign of a bigger problem. |

Same thing happens to my iMac when it switches to (for example) the login screen, I can see borders and boxes and bottom icons leave a faint image behind.
I find it fades away by the following day. |

That's no doubt why Apple calls it a retina display: It makes a back-up of the image on your retinas for convenient 'off-screen viewing' Excellent! |

| The other day I noticed the exact same thing you're talking about. The safari web address field and search box were faintly visible on my home screen. I rebooted the ipad and it went away. Not sure what caused it but I hadn't noticed it before or since. |

Hopefully one day they will come up with a direct-connect to our actual retinas. Then I won't have to buy glasses any more, I'll just paste an iPhone to my forehead so I can see through its lens. The touch-screen may be a bit painful.

I think that only works if you hold it screen-side down.
