Is it ok to grab and use textures from there and what are the rules, if any?

11 views and no answers, this must be a stupid question...

It's a little confusing. Some people only do their own textures so they dont end up with difficulties.

My understanding is this:

1. Textures are only legal in EXPERT editing.
2. Textures from the library are only legal if they are used as an obvious texture, not as a feature.

Gack!!! Just corrected this. Expert! only legal in expert!

I think if people have shared the textures in the texture library it's usually because people are happy to share them. Typically it's good to make a note in your photographer's notes section commenting that you have used a texture and crediting the original photographer.

It's okay to use textures in advanced if you didn't shoot the texture and it's not done during the challenge period? DId you mean Expert?

edit to add - I really don't pay much attention so I'm asking the question quite seriously.

Of course, there are hours of fun to be had in building up a library of your own. I used to be quite addicted to making and shooting and scanning anything i could find. I even used to scour wallpaper shops for the free samples and pick up any old materials i came across. I used to burn and distress bits of wood and paper as well. Much fun.

This guy on Flickr Skeletalmess has tons of really good textures you can use. However, the same as using the textures on DPC, he expects to be credited if you are using them. There are plenty of good resources but some of them are for $$. This one Flypaper Textures has some good ones, but it's a paid for site.

I am assuming, since you are taking part in the texture and overlay side challenge that this is what you were actually asking about and not the use of textures in challenges? In challenges it's not OK to use them unless it's expert editing.

Hey Sarah, that skeletalmess guy is ok with using his stuff as soon as you change anything from his stuff. Only no selling of his work 'as is'. Which is obvious, so i grabbed a few from there. Thx for the link.

Even in expert editing you surely have to shoot your own textures? Even though I think they might be exempt from the time restrictions?

Good idea, not that I'm going to build a library but this morning in a small village i did take some shots of old walls and some trees that I may use in some pictures.

I'm not too worries about challenges, I hardly enter them and even then I tend to avoid the experts ;p
