Every month there's usually three or four entries by the end of the first day. I'm curious to know how people choose their best photo 14 hours into the month, with 706 hours left to spare (months with 30 days).

Maybe that's my problem, I over analyze things.

I guess it's about having an entry, lots of time to replace it, but at least you don't forget to submit one.

If you do your best work in the first 14 hours, you can take the rest of the month off! :)

I think some people like to enter a placeholder early. The end of the month can creep up on you, and there have been months that I intended to but forgot to enter. However, 14 hours into the month does seem a little nuts to me.

I agree with hajeka and markwiley. I think it's just to make sure SOMETHING is submitted, and can eventually be replaced later if the need is felt.

This is why I constantly fail to enter into free studies.

I think that possibly if you have a photo that you really like and submit it early as a placeholder, then you can compare each new contender to that as a benchmark and replace it when you have something better. That would perhaps be more manageable than looking at several possibilities towards rollover and being overwhelmed with indecision (my usual approach).

Exactly what I do. Although never within 14 hours LOL. Nevertheless, if I get a picture I really like, it goes up, until one I like better replaces it, and so forth.

Ha! I have been like you all year Marion because I made the mistake (in my case) of entering the Free Study Marathon and I hate to quit something I commit to. I'm just too busy though and most months I have to frantically dig through crappy photos at the last minute for just anything at all to post. I can't wait for the year to finish :P

Agree with jomari and Bear_Music
I did go out today looking for a windows entry - I had something in mind but life and the weather got in the way so the shoot got put off. Today the weather was glorious and my husband and I ended up spending four hours wandering around, stopping wherever I felt like it. The last place we stopped had nothing to do with windows but yielded a shot that I would be happy to consider for my November FS. It won't get in there tonight because of the Windows deadline, but it may well end up in there by tomorrow.

Yep. Jomari's usual approach I mean, with Brent's essential addendum - wading through the "crappy photos for anything at all to post." Although I can simplify or reduce the latter by only looking at the photos taken that very day. I am afraid to check the dates on my FS submissions to verify how often I have done this.

Yep, I will put in a photo as an FS placeholder. After all you know it's not going to get accidentally entered in another challenge, and in the meantime if you shoot something better, it's just a quick swap. Don't think I've ever entered one as a placeholder only 14 hrs in, though.

Having missed this months free study and having 6 or so cracking pics I will now start to utilise this method of adding then replacing them with better ones :(

Since you guys love torture maybe DPC could help out by changing the submission page into one large bracket. You upload 30 photos and then each day you eliminate one "loser" until you are left with just 1.

That'd be why I'm sitting on a 4.6 right now.......Darn FSM!

+1

FSM pushes me to go and take landscape pictures each month even if all this effort is becoming a curse :)

I never submit the first day in a FS because I couldn't forget to submit a photo during the month since I have been clear in mind the project of having a shot for the FSM.

I have once submitted less than hours after the beginning of the week (I was the first) and luckily I won a ribbon with that shot.

I think I need to follow this approach in future. It will prevent me finding I have nothing entered with hours to go, then desperately sitting down to edit a few and finally submitting the wrong one.

I found this statement kind of funny.
I guess if it's all about winning, might as well give the voters what they want to see.

It's a sort of paradox: I love going and take landscape pictures, but I have my job and my family and can be hard to find one day to go the mountains or wake up at night to catch the light at dawn. I would say that I love that curse. If it would be only a matter of winning I would have used those landscapes for regular challenges where I could get more in terms of score and perhaps ribbons. To tell the truth if I analyze this thing I have to say that mainly it's for having fun with friends. There is a place at a couple of hours from my town where I use to bring always different friends with me. We go in the afternoon, take pictures at sunset, eat in the only small restaurant of the village and then some star shots at night before coming back home. No, not a matter of winning, mainly of spending a nice day taking photos. When I go back home I feel like the batteries of my body are finally recharged :)

Good Morning all. I ended up here because I found this website by accident about a month ago. I wanted a place that I can go and show not just my photos but a place where I can learn, express, and take better pictures. I found this place that and I don't regret it. My photos are not worthy of being posted for challenges but to have a place to put them up and learn from comments and critisism would open me up to the thing I would love to do for fun. I have seen a great majority of all the different works in different catogories and I have to say Spectacular.

I do have a question though. Free Study? what does that entail? Is it like a free-for-all of said description? I tried to get a better understanding and just wanted to make sure. I'm sorry, if I sound so totally like a photonewb. I just am :)

Again ty and hope to see more of all of you and your works.

It's a monthly free challenge. You can submit your best photo you've taken in that month. The ruleset is always advanced editing.

Welcome Adrian :)
