A couple of days ago I bought the last few bits of Nikon equipment online from Digitalrev. I didn't actually realise the stuff would be posted out to me from Hong Kong until I tracked the order today.
My question is probably stupid with Nikon being a Asian company but is quality control of lenses and flash units any different over there than the UK and US?
Basically are the products I bought going to differ from what I would get in terms of quality in the UK?
I bought:
Nikon SB910
Nikon 24mm 2.8D
I know somebody who bought a mobile phone a few years back online from hong kong (Motorola) and when they got it it was completely different than the UK version and online research indicated they do not have the same quality controls over there.
Again, I know its probably a stupid question but I'd just like to confirm my fears as incorrect.

I know in the US, most of the stuff that ships direct from HK is "gray market" which is NOT covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
It's the same product from the same factory, just didn't go through the US distribution channels so the MFG will use the warranty threat to protect their domestic distribution chain. |

The other issue is that you may find yourself hit with some fairly hefty import tax. If it is going through the Royal Mail system, they collect the tax on behalf of Customs and Excise and you don't get your package until you pay up. At least, I am pretty sure that is how it works.

I am in Australia. I buy almost all photo equipment in HK. It is around 30-40% cheaper than retail here and I have not found any problems. Some sellers also offer 12 months Australian warranty or their own with return to them if any problems. There are no import duties nor GST for items under $1000 in Australia. I don't know how it is in UK. I am moving to France next year and I am rather horrified about how much more expensive the gear is going to be. For example, I just orded 650D for $US660 from HK based T-Dimension. I checked the prices in the US - $760 (Amazon) and UK - $US870 (540 pounds!). |
