ohhhhh is that what it means? I couldn't figure it out. I guess Sesame Street turned me into an idiot. |

This election is about priorities, perhaps. |
Priorities like security for our Libyan Ambassador? ...oh wait, we don't have one any more. That can't be optimal. |
If we go into blaming presidents for what happened on their watch...
Bush= 911, Nearly 3000 Americans dead (in New York City)
Reagan=83' Beirut-161 dead(cut and run- no response, no retribution)
Obama= Libya, 4 dead? IN the most unstable country save maybe, Syria. and who knows what Obama has in store for the perps. |
There is such a double standard when it comes to national security. If 9/11 and the Iraq war had happened with a Democrat in the White House, a Dem wouldn't be elected to the presidency for a generation. But Bush gets a complete pass. |

Is the anger held against Obama for these deaths in any way shifted by the fact that the Republican lead house cut 330 million dollars from the amount that the White House asked for in funding for embassy security in fiscal 2012?
Is the fact that only 5 Americans and 6 Libyans were on security when two waves of attackers estimated to be around sixty in all, armed with automatic weapons , RPGs and shoulder mounted anti-aircraft weapons attacked the embassy. RPGs fire range is 1000 yards, stingers fire 7000 yards.
Had the Benghazi embassy gotten the requested extra 12 agents, do you really think it would have kept Chris Stevens from being killed? Stevens died from smoke inhalation as a result of a weapon that could have been launched from blocks away, and a force of 60 highly armed suicide shock troops are only slightly less likely to over run 23 agents than 11.
I know it is a political talking point on Fox, like anything else Congressman Issa is involved in, it is less about fixing problems than counting coup on the other party.

This is what boggles my mind. Obama sucks, Romney sucks, but everyone is running around asking the wrong questions and thinking their guy is awesome and the other guy sucks for all the wrong reasons. I already quoted once today to a friend and I'll do it again.
Hitchhiker's Guide to th Galaxy. Truth via fiction:
"The President in particular is very much a figurehead- he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it. On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had- he has already spent two of his ten presidential years in prison for fraud. Very very few people realize that the President and the Government have virtually no power at all, and of these few people only six know whence ultimate political power is wielded. Most of the others secretly believe that the ultimate decision-making process is handled by a computer. They couldn't be more wrong."

My understanding is that the additional agents that were requested would have gone to Tripoli anyway, not Benghazi. |

Yes, he does. Yes, we do. Not many, fewer than we had a century ago, but those special forces guys in Afghanistan are indeed riding horses.
There is a difference between fewer, and none.

mounted police are a good tool to deal with angry crowds. they clear a street fast because 1)they are big and scary, 2) no matter how willing you are to hurt a cop, are you really enough of an asshat to hurt the poor horse he is riding? |

You beat me to it. Plus they have a really good POV for overlooking crowds, and they are easy for civilians to spot as well. |

Asshat is a great word. Speaking of asshats, how about that shining blond star of the GOP, Ann Coulter?
Eta: sorry to ruin a poignant part about horses. Her comments and backlash are prob best left for another thread.

I've been on the other side of such an event, and Brennan's description is spot on ... plus, on normal patrol, they are a great way for the police to interact with the public on a friendly basis. In crowded cities (like San Francisco), they can get places a patrol car or even a motorcycle can't, and in patrolling the parks they don't create any noise pollution.

So... how about that arrest of Jill Stein for trying to get into the debate? My favorite part is when the police made a line she couldn't cross and then arrested HER for stopping traffic. What silly ninnies. Cops use the same old tricks like that. They don't even NEED to be more clever because who's gunna stop them? (Side note when I was a kid I saw a cop beat an old man and then the man was charged with assault. Same trick. Cops arresting someone for their own crime.)

Cops are another subject, but on the issue of Jill Stein - what is f'd up is that she and the other candidates were not invited to debate. ALL candidates whose names will be on the ballot should be allowed to participate. That is something I would like to see changed by the next election cycle. |

Well they designed a lovely little catch-22 so that third party candidates most assuredly CANT end up in the debates. Then we all get to hear the "voting for a 3rd party candidate is throwing your vote away!" speech from concerned friends. How many people don't vote third party for this fear?
Do not look behind the curtain. Just keep on voting for crap option A. and crap option B. and shut up about it!

Oooh - we seem to agree on something. I'm excited. ;-)
I am hoping the internet and social media / new media can help change this two party situation. Will take time and effort. |

In the 2008 election I was just as excited about Obama as anyone else, then slowly the disenchantment set in along with the truth. The thing that gets me though is the pendulum we're on. Dems suck lets get a Rep! Reps suck lets get a dem! People don't like Obama so they think swinging to Romney will fix things. Can we all just stop and take a moment and see they both suck and our "choice" our "democracy" is a bunch of fluff and pixie dreams? In other words, it doesn't actually exist.
If you give the same limited options in any other context, it's blatantly obvious there is no real choice in the matter, but when it comes to the presidency we are completely blind.
Ex: What religion do you want to be, Protestant or Catholic? Well umm... I was thinking there are some other options out there. NOPE. YOU GEt TWO CHOICES!
What do you want for dinner, lasagna or spaghetti? Well maybe I'd like some cur... NOPE! LASAGNA OR SPAGHETTI!!

Bravo!
It gets even better; they both work for the happy few, the 1-10 % and they basically buy the presidency, ridiculous |
