I bit the bullet and replaced my early 2008 MacBook Pro with a brand new 2012 Macbook Pro with 15.4" screen / retina display. This puppy is rocking with 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache, 512GB flash drive (ssd), and 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory. Simply put, I'm in love :)

With the SSD, that thing has to *fly*! It's just amazing the difference it makes. The cost differential, though still substantial, is not nearly the wallet-killer it used to be. And the performance is even better than it was jut a year or so ago.

The only problem with SSD drives is the write limitations on the drive. That's why I use mine for static, immutable data, like programs and the operation system, but for files which get moved, added, or deleted frequently, you can actually burn out that part of the drive.

Congratulations.

I highly recommend optimizing your editing software to take advantage of the hardware. I'ld recommend a 60-120gig scratch ssd drive if you dont mind swapping one around every now n then. A decent usb 3.0 or firewire/whatever mac calls it is also super good. that way your MAIN drive keeps on keepin on

I have an external 1TB that I use for time machine back ups, and another external 512gb for storing photos. The externals aren't ssd's but they are working out fine for now.
