take an image showing a reflection off of a semi reflective or high gloss surface.

mirrors, shiny metal, glass etc are DNMC.

I'm not sure this is clear enough on what would be acceptable. For example, I would think that a high quality car paint job would be OK. Is that right?
I like the idea, though.

yes. dnmc would be the typical uses, mirrors, chrome, window reflections, sunglasses.

plastics, polished wood, glossy painted surfaces are all good.

That would be similar too 'Reflections without Mirrors' of which there have been 5 already.

i was trying to make it so that the reflection is more muted, almost mix between a shadow and a reflection

Something like this? It's the houses across the street as reflected in the roof of my car (when it was relatively clean!).
