Ok -- I've wondered this many times, and have never found out how to do it.

I've created a mask on a layer -- here's a picture of the layer and mask and a blow up of the mask

But now that I've put all that high quality work into the mask, I decide that I used the wrong opacity when painting, and I want to reduce the overall opacity of the mask by 45%. Is there any way of doing this?

Thanks!!

In PS CS6, there is a slider that let you modify the mask density, which would do exactly what you want here.

Alternatively, you can directly tweak the mask itself, for example using levels on it (select the mask, then ctrl+L, then move the central arrow to the left: it will make the mask 'whiter', ie diminish its opacity).

just fill the mask with white at 45% opacity

Thanks, Christophe! I never looked up there! I really should learn photoshop someday. :)

Thanks Oliver! I also like that idea for some other things, as well.

If it's to much can't you just lower the opacity on the mask via the blending mode as well???

No, because the blending mode changes too many other things in the nonmasked parts-
