Yup, I know them well, Richard. We have a pretty healthy population of them more north here, in and around Cameron Pass (where that was taken). I have a feeling a lot of them that had formerly been in the Rawah area where they were reintroduced and have done very well are now migrating south a bit due to territory conflicts.

I've been very close to moose, but always by accident and always did exactly what you noted- kept a large tree nearby.

If you're looking for some moose specifically, there are somewhere around 10 bulls of varying sizes that are frequently within viewing distance of hwy 14. They also are frequently a bit south along Michigan Ditch, and then along the trail that goes to American Lakes and Thunder Pass (which forms the north boundary of RMNP).

5 miles SE of Walden along Hwy 14. December 2011.

Two related factors are causing migration of the moose. We are in the middle of an exceptional drought. And, the 64,000 acre High Park wildfire of June 2012 changed the region in the short run. Moose are willow browsers. They are seeking the willows. And, it's full rut, so the bulls are seeking cows. Soon to come will be hunting season, which causes the bulls to flee to the relative safety of the national park when the guns go off. Do they know the hunting season approaches? Yes, I think so.

I'll bet the picture he got was to die for. I just hope he got a killer shot.

Tragic, but he might need to be nominated for the Darwin awards. I remember when I was in rocky mountain national park a few years ago and I had 5 ram sheep come.within 50 yards of me. I didn't aproach them, but I moved away for MY safety because it was toooo close.

Cute Ellie gets a bit pissed

The ear flapping is warning, and 90% mock charges, but when the tail raises then the brown stuff is about to hit the fan...

Arapahoe National Wildlife Refuge?

Figured you knew about all the moose up there, knowing you ventured up to Walden. There is a pretty good population of them in the open areas, but I've always had more luck finding them in the conifer forests, personally.
