Now, what's it called, and in what country was it taken? This is the quintessential vehicle of the country involved.

ETA: Sorry about the camera shake, LOL.

Were you there recently?

Last time I was there was in 2005, I think. This particular shot was taken in 2003. Holy cats, that's almost a decade ago now!

I knew what they were called, but I couldn't remember the story or country. So, I looked at the window sticker and googled the name of the city on the sticker.

I'll post something soon.

Though the facets are designed to interface with a wrench, this is definitely not a fastener.

A bottom view

Also, a 3/8" wrench is used on it, but not to tighten or loosen any threaded joints.

That's not a hole in the middle, it's solid material.

A surface sensor of some type?
09/14/2012 03:04:31 PM · #3698
It's a sensor, yes. You mount it to a surface, this one requires and adhesive bond, others use threaded studs or mount directly on circuit boards.

What does it measure?

I know many millions of people are carrying them as part of another device.

A vibration pickup or accelorometer.

Bingo.

It's a miniature piezoelectric accelerometer. It gets glued to the surface that I need the vibration measurement from. It's faceted to allow removal using a wrench to twist it off rather than just breaking it off, which can overload and damage the sensing element inside.
