I know I should have had her take off the necklace, but it was kind of an impromptu "photo session". I have little knowledge on proper lighting techniques, so I know I could have made major adjustments there as well... I just don't know what adjustments to make! Any suggestions that would help make this a better picture would be greatly appreciated.

I'll let the experts give the expert advice, but I do notice a couple of things:
(1) The necklace clasp as you said
(2) She's too close to the backdrop so her shadow is cast upon it. Moving her away from it would help (if the room is big enough).
(3) It would be pretty easy to clone out the light band around her wrist where her watch usually is.
She's beautiful ... you're a lucky man. |

I like the pose, expression, and the point of view, and I like the necklace (except the clasp). Hopper's comments are good, too. I'd just say to add--get the whole place brighter, then you have more options. try to find a place where natural sunlight is coming through a window or doorway for lovely, directional light.

Thanks! I didn't even notice the tan lines on her wrist. I'm going to make a few adjustments and repost the image. Thank you both for the help!

A beautiful model is a good place to start. I think you've got that one down pat. ;) I like the angle, the expression, and the pose. The strong shadow is the only thing that really stands out as being not so great. Otherwise very nice.

Thanks for all the comments... I feel very fortunate to have such a beautiful model at my disposal. I am sure I will be posting a lot more pictures of her in the future. I also am lucky to have another beautiful model in the making...
My website is kind of being nutty, so the images may take some time loading

Todd, You have a beautiful wife and daughter! Your photos look a little dark on my monitor, I hope you don't mind but I took one of them into PS and adjusted levels contrast and added a little USMask.
Here is the result:

I agree with the above, but I would crop the picture of your daughter a TINY bit, I just went WOW untill the blue shorts came into view :) but the pictures are great and your family is very sweet! |

Yes, that third one is really great (they all are, but I especially love the third) - and I agree with the suggestions to make it perfect!

Regarding the original post...
First, I agree with hopper and rcrawford's comments.
In portraits it is always a big decision about focus - sharp or soft. Yours looks like you did not make that decision in the posted image. The focus is a little soft but looks more like you did not apply USM more than it was the intended focus.
Soft focus in portraits can be very powerful and probably would be in this particular image. Here it would be used to express your model's (wife's) delicate beauty.
In these type images lighting is paramount. If I were you I would consider learning lighting techniques to bring out what you hope to capture in the portrait.
You have a great start and this it is a good image.
