It's from my July Free Study. I'm generally good with search engines, but I've completely struck out...

Even more specifically, Limenitis arthemis astyanax. Interesting difference in coloration between the four subspecies!
I would have sworn this was a member of the Swallowtail (Pappilonidae) family, but it's actually an Admiral. |

Ya, I take it back. it's not a swallowtail. I was specifically thinking it was a male Spicebush Swallowtail with the little swallowtails torn off, but the red-spotted purple is a much better answer.

Spicebush is *exactly* what I thought of when I saw it, an I knew there were some swallowtails that lacked "tails."
Now looking at it again, though, there were hints that it's actually smaller, more along the size you'd expect for an Admiral. |

I would say it's a black one with some blue. I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night. |

Yes! Yes! Yes!
Very close in quick view to a Spicebush Swallowtail, but just a little smaller, and the wing shape is much different. You can see the lower wings are much fuller, and lack the tails.

He/she is somewhat larger than most Admirals which was part of what puzzled me.

Damn, now I feel stoopid! Jeb, try this:
- Crop your image to include just the insect and as little of the BG as possible
- Upload it into Google Image Search
Bang! Answer in two seconds, LOL! |

I was guessing a pipevine, black swallowtail or spicebush. They're all so incredibly similar, it's easier if you see the underside of the wing.

I agree with hahn23, go here; Moths & Butterflies and enter keyword "Purple" to find images.
The red didn't show up in your photo, or it may not have been there on the butterfly.
Butterflies are quite variable in their color, but the shapes and positioning of spots remains fairly constant.
ETA, I knew you are from the Pa area. It helps to have a state and county location when hunting an ID for a butterfly.

Bingo! Here's a pic of what Fritz sent a link to that looks virtually identical to my little friend.
