You think you have it bad with negative comments?
"Mark Ingram was jailed for five months at Southampton magistrates' court after pleading guilty to causing harassment without violence, unauthorised modification of computer material and an offence under the Computer Misuse Act. He was also ordered not to contact Ms Hinton for two years.
Sentencing him District Judge Lorraine Morgan said he had "blighted" Ms Hinton's life, adding: "One can only imagine how devastating it must be to find yourself in a position where such private and family details are being accessed by a complete stranger and are being used by that stranger."
Stuart Western, defending, said Ingram, from Baron's Court, saw the photos and read what he thought were " overcomplimentary comments" in relation to Ms Hinton's pictures.
"This concerned him as he was himself a keen amateur photographer but was not getting recognition of his own photos on the website," Mr Western said.
Mr Western told the court Ingram's behaviour was caused by severe stress in his City job, and that he had lost his position at Bank Gessellschaft.
After the hearing Ms Hinton added: "I'm glad he has been jailed so other people can know that they cannot do this to people and get away with it. Why he ever did this to me and put me through all this I would like to know - but I suspect I never will find out."

Wow!
So when you sent me that email pretending to be my mother it wasn't because you secretly wanted to change into a middle aged Indian woman????
In all seriousness, internet stalking can be every bit as devastating as more traditional variants and I can't imagine what it must have been like for this woman.

He first sent me mail pretending to be my mother; I did not realize it was not her so returned the email... They were funny emails a bit cryptic to start with, but I thought strange mother & left it just carried on sending mail backwards & forward... I sent pictures of the house, new car, wrote about life, work, and family as you do to your mother... It was not until my mum rang me to ask why I'd not contacted her for a while that I checked & discovered this other Mavis Dean...
Things this man did to me...
Opened accounts in my name & filled them with porn & mailed undesirable women using my name...
Opened many email accounts in my name & my families name...
Sent me abusive mail as though it was from members of my family
Sent my friends & fellow photographers abusive emails as from me
Joined me up to so many websites that all need passwords to unsubscribe...
Followed me to what ever website I was showing my work & put horrid remarks - never using his own name always something cryptic
Sent abusive & threatening mail to me... this continued for 10 months
If I did not hear from him for a while I get a mail saying "think I've forgotten you? Well I haven't"!!!
He put comments on my work, telling me he knew where I was photographing
After this I never went out alone which I'd happily done before...
Hacked into one of my private email accounts & sent abusive mail to my friends from this & changed details...
Deleted all my work from www.photopoints.com one night, then wrote obscene words with my profile picture for all to see... this was a sad night indeed...
Sent me taunting emails about what he'd done to my account
The FBI got involved and they found out about this man, he'd opened many accounts in my name in Germany & the UK; he was a city investment banker ...
Just persistent abusive mail... Right up to the day before he was arrested... |

A cyber stalker.
I am really glad he got caught and is now doing time. Too many people are big and brave when they think they are anonymous .... wonder how big and brave he feels now when he bends over to pick up the soap ;)

Unfortunately there are a LOT of them out there. Not many in terms of a percentage of overall internet users but lots in absolute numbers. As has been said above, the internet gives some people the anonymity they need to be able to behave in ways they would not dream of if they had to do it in person.

Funny what motivates people.... presumably, if he had the skills to hack into an email server and take over one of the accounts, he could have used these skills to other, more profitable ends. |
