Is it worth it to purchase one?

For the most part I would say no. If you take the time to follow some good calibration instructions you'll come reasonably close without the expense of the hardware.

I would second //www.aim-dtp.net/. I also use their "AIM RGB Pro = WideGamut D65 G1.00" profiles for all my editting in PS. All I did is set my monitor using the blackpoint instructions on the site, used there gamut calibrator bitmap (instead of adobe's) within the adobe gamma cpl and i've been extremely satisfied with my output results.

yeah it seems my monitor is way darker than anyone elses, and its a bit of a bum
