If you know you will be submitting an image that will skirt the rules, especially the "major elements" issue, it is a good idea to PM a few friends to ask their opinions (with the assumption they they will skip voting on the image), or ask an SC member their opinion.

Four weeks? Four days is getting long, especially if it results in someone not getting their front-page time. Now, that said, my opinion applies where the submitter has held up their end, submitting both a valid proof file and editing steps as soon as possible. You simply would not believe some of the poor behavior in this regard, though. Folks ignore repeated requests for days on end, then claim they didn't see any requests. They claim they were DQ'd with no communication, when they failed to respond to questions. You name the behavior, the SC has seen it.
The rule is we have 48 hours to submit a proof file. The SC will often give a little extra time. If asked with a good reason, a day or two has been granted (it's not guaranteed). So you could be into three plus days before the work can begin.
But four weeks, no, should never happen. period. I don't know the specifics of any such cases, so I can't comment further.

Kirbic, I sent in a request a few days ago questioning an image that had been on the front page since the 8th, meaning it placed in the top three, it had it's week on the front page, and now its bumped off, and the image still hasn't gone through validation per an answer I was given by SC in their communication to me. The image IMHO is an obvious DQ having seen one of the multiple images it was put together with. And yet over a week later still not done. Someone missed a free study front page showing....

Matt, I agree that if someone lost out on a chance at the front page, it's *very* unfortunate, most especially in a Free Study. I wouldn't want to make guesses about the current state of the process, but I can say that in my time on the SC, which was admittedly years ago, the images that took time were the ones where folks were jerking us around with responses or where there was a very fine line and a heated discussion ensued.
In the end, the fact that validation doesn't even *start* until voting is over kind of puts us all at a disadvantage. We could start validation earlier, since it becomes pretty obvious which images will have the highest probability of being top 5, but that would also tip off the top 5 as to their status. We could also request originals/edits from, say, the top eight or ten to obfuscate this and ensure we get all of the top 5 finishers represented. If the user doesn't know they are in the top 10% or so based on their score, they aren't paying attention.
If we made the request after, say, 5 days, the 48 hours would expire at the same time as voting and in theory validation/disqualification could be near-immediate.

I'd do it for free. I waste enough time here, might as well do something productive.

Just a quick reminder that all of the SC are unpaid volunteers. It's one of the reasons I typically direct my steam at Langdon, since the SC really can't fairly be held to the same standard.

I know, I was just responding appropriately to Mike.
If the SC is swamped, why not snag a couple more people?

While technically true, they do get Free Memberships to the site. Although that certainly isn't worth what they have to do, I just wanted to point it out that they are compensated, no matter how poorly.

how could that possibly get validated? The scene had to change or he cloned out major elements.

let's talk about it via the tickets, Matt. I don't want to derail this thread.

ETA: I also wish we had the power and control that L has. SC might be able to get a lot more done, including adding more SC!

OK I started a thread for a discussion, if you wish to remove it do so, and we can discuss it via ticket. However I'd like to know the answers to my questions I put in the thread.

To me, seeing that one original that is cut and dry a DQ exactly by the rule and through past precedents.

Matt

Well, they DQed me. :(

I still disagree with it, but I can't change it now! :) I will make sure to do it differently next time.

I still very much appreciate everyone's kind comments and criticism on my work.
Onto the next one...

Sorry to learn of the DQ, Samantha. It is very cool image, and the experience has been a learning experience at least for me. I look forward to seeing your next one...

Sorry to hear that. It is a superb photo whatever the ruling and no doubt many have committed worse crimes and got away with it:)

can't say i'm surprised, so much for "advanced" editing, it clearly isn't.

If I was correct, you will certainly have one to replace it soon.

In the current incarnation of the rule, I agree with the DQ.
That being said, the more photos I sell, the more I realize there should only be two rule sets, minimal and expert. It makes sense to allow everything or nothing, but that's an argument for another thread.
