Here are some pics I took between 4:15 am and about 5:15 am on Saturday in Waco, TX

These were taken from my hotel room where I stayed at enroute to Fossil rim for the DPC get together

Lightning in Waco

this storm was pretty intense and woke me up, so I decided to get a few pics, some are hand held and some are using my windown mount attached to the hand rail

cool shots. Kinda a wierd that they were taken in Waco 'cause I just saw this docu call Waco: Rules of Engagement.
Freaky coincidence.

Very nice shots. What was your process in taking this shots. Set your camera on a tripod, pick a long exposure and wait? Just so we can all try it.

I used bulb mode. and the remote timer to snap the shots to help reduce camera shake.
some were hand held and a few others I used a window mount to mount the camera on the hand rail out side my hotel room.

I normally use a tripod, but it was in the truck and it was raining bad. I always keep the window mount in my camera bag.

post processing was croping, reizing, adjusted briteness and contrast

how do you know when the lightning was striking? I always try to take pics of lightning storms, but can never get any shots.

I remember a few weeks ago reading about a guy who had a timer for his camera, that made the camera go off every 30 seconds or so. I think that might work too :)

i tried to take some lightning pics a week or so ago, but by the time I was able to get my camera, it stopped. The first few strikes were big, so I thought it would be done (where i live in colorado, we don't get many lightning storms). But then, there was one more that put the electricity out for a few seconds, so I decided to get the camera. Went outside for about 5 minutes and there hasn't been another strike since then.

joking aside, the best way is just to leave the shutter open for at least 30 sec, more time works better though. the longer you leave it open the greater the chances you'll get something. plus you can get multiple strikes on the same shot.

the downside to leaving the shutter open for so long, is that city lights get really blown out, so the method works best when there are no artificial lights. also with digital, the heat from the battery can do weird things to one side of the picture with long exposures.

i really like trying to shoot lightning, but there haven't been any t-storms recently, and when there are it seems like i never have my camera.
