I think it's great that there are so many suggestions for challenge topics, and in particular that many of them are unusual. There is one aspect that bothers me a little, and that's when so many are made at once that they dominate the front page. Currently nine of the 30 threads on the front page list are challenge suggestions.
I thought about suggesting that when someone wants to suggest several ideas, they do it in a single thread, but that seems to dilute the discussion of a single suggestion. I also don't really want to ignore that section, as I do like seeing the suggestions.
I don't know if I'm the only one bothered by this, so I'd like to (hopefully) generate some discussion as to whether the community thinks it's an issue and if so what solutions might present themselves.

See, I hate flooding the front page myself... Of course, when I feel like suggesting challenges, I often want to suggest 10 or so, so I'm not sure how to deal with this..
I could, of course, try to just space them out some, but chances are that I'd then make one suggestion and walk away.
Also, I am now curiously tempted to actually try to fill the front page with challenge suggestions. ;) |

i can see your point, but im not sure the solution or if one is even required.
the isn't the point of suggesting topics to vet their perception? |

A non-issue for me, regarding them being on the front page. But I do think that posting a bunch of them at once does the whole suggesting thing a disservice, as some ideas will fall through the cracks because they were missed in the blob. |

Personally, I'd like to see a change in the way our front page is organized. I think certain categories of discussion should have their own, separate blocks of the front page. The blocks should be collapsible. So "Challenge Suggestions", in particular, could be a subset collapsed at the top of the front page, and anybody who wanted to participate could click an arrow and expand it.
I agree that bunches and bunches of all-at-once suggestions flooding the front page is counter-productive. |

I think that such a change would make our front page a lot more like the presentation from some of the canned forum software out there... and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. On the one hand, it would definitely solve the problem. On the other hand, it moves away completely from a "most recent first" view of forum activity.
The more I think about it, the more I feel that the "stream of forum consciousness" view (our current state) is valuable. I'd hate to see us lose that, even if it means occasional upsets. It seems like to most folks it's not a big deal. Perhaps we just need to ask folks politely to limit the number they make all at once. It would benefit those threads, since nine co-running challenge suggestion threads aren't going to get much individual attention, certainly not the same attention as, say, two or three.

I wish the Rants section showed up on the front page... or at least just for members? |

It does, unless you have it turned off in preferences. |

Ooooh, wow! I hadn't messed with that before. Seems rants is turned off by default. |

You can have mine...
Regarding the topic, it doesn't bother me to see the front page flooded with suggestions, and I do believe each needs it's own thread, but it does seem to decrease the chance of one or more of them from being seen or replied to. |

Maybe, unless they are all related, and only slight deviations from each other.

Today was my first time ever suggesting a challenge and I've been here for yrs. I've probably never even started more than a few threads but I thought the doppelganger was a good idea :) |

The whole forum-front page presentation is a bit awkward. if you are gone for a couple days, you miss boatloads of things that just escape into the nano-never. I have no suggestion but I would like to see it changed to be streamlined.
Perhaps the challenge suggestion threads are more noticeable because people care and want to see them, read them, and add their own 2 cents. |

When I find a suggestion intriguing, I most often chime in... when there are nine of them at once, however, my eyes just cross and I move on. There's no way I will stop, think about each one...

Just out of curiosity, can one do a search on challenge topics to see if it has been done before.
When I see a suggestion for a challenge that has already been done 3 times it tends to rankle me just a tad.
Maybe it's just me.

You can go here on the menu: Challenges > Challenge History and check the "show all" option and click the button, then do a FIND (usually CTRL+F) on the page. |

I'd say get rid of the challenge suggestions forum altogether and have a challenge suggestions form instead where suggestions are submitted directly into a database and members then get to vote on their favourites which are then semi-randomly chosen at roll-over by a script/algorithm rather than manually as they seem to be now. :)

Heresy!
