The pic below is from a few years ago. I posted it here and got some great tips for post-processing.

I went back to this spot this summer with better gear and retook the pic under better lighting conditions. I am still getting that smeared look in the waterfall.

What is causing that? Shutter speed? Is there anything to do to make it not look so smeared?

Looks to me like water spray / vapor. You could clone some of the other water areas over it, but it is what it is in terms of reality, IMO. It's an awesome shot, by the way.

I completely agree with Art... It is a great shot..in a great location. What editing have you done??? Oh and yes it does look like water vapor / spray...that's a very natural thing

I think you may have only two options for removing that "smeared" look:

1) Change the laws of physics
2) Use a long shutter to produce a flowing effect.

Yes, it is the water vapor/spray.

I guess I will have to bring and ND filter and tripod next year and see if the longer exposure helps.

Thanks for the kind words, Art and Cowboy. Maybe I am just being too picky. I have an 8x10 of this on my cube wall at work. This one was actually taken on an old Mavica CD camera.

The orginal was blown-out severly in the gravel on the right side due to full sun hitting it and all else being in shadow.

here is the original thread if anyone is interested. I ended up doing a lot of clone work and little dodge and burn.

This is at Multnomah Falls in Oregon. There is a 500ft waterfall behind me.
