What if one, ahem, set up a candid?
Wouldn't that play to the idea in definition that the princes of Serendip were "always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity"?

(And, yes, you can "set up" a candid by creating a situation in which it is likely that one will see a reaction--something like the Candid Camera show set-ups. Or an attractive nuisance, if you prefer. Or like the "Don't Click Here" thread.)

I love it when a thread comes together...

It'll be nice when this one's over and there are more straight forward challenges whose definitions are more broadly agreed upon :)

ja right, like proportions.......

There are never (or certainly very seldom) challenges whose definitions are broadly agreed on - even "portraits" had it's share of disagreements about whether a portrait had to be just head and shoulders or could it include the whole body or could it not show the face at all...

I can't remember a single week in the (rather long) time I've been here that there hasn't been at least one thread on forums, if not more, discussing the various interpretations of the theme, both during challenge week and during voting.

How do you know? I can take a picture of a flower. whether it is in my studio, my yard or i found it while stolling the himalayas one afternoon by accident, you cannot tell from the photo itself. My caption / title is what would connect the pic to the challenge, and it may be a lie. Hey, perhaps I rendered the whole image in PS and dreamed the walk...oh, no, my secret is out LOL

Oh dear, and in an open challenge too!)

Mine was a serendipitous shot, rather than one which represents serendipity. So far, only one comment about it not fitting the challenge, and a score hovering just over 5.5. I'm happy because I really like it.

"Create an image that represents Serendipity."

What's so hard to understand? Nowhere in the description does it say that 'getting' the photo had to be serendipitous. I can't understand why anybody would think that that was the case. I would say that an entry that doesn't represent serendipity doesn't meet the challenge criteria, even if getting the shot was serendipitous.

A photographer wearing all orange clothing, in an orange room, takes a photo using an orange camera, of a yellow rose. Would that photo meet the criteria for the Orange challenge?

Gina, I think it's those of us who chose to "create" images that represent the concept that are suffering from the DNMTC voters. Never mind, I should have learned by now that there are always people who are looking for reasons to exclude some interpretations from their "acceptable" list.

Exactly! What a good way to express what I've been thinking about this issue. Unless the actual photo demonstrates serendipity, how can the viewer tell that getting the photo was serendipitous? (I did a set-up shot, but I don't think I'm getting hammered for that--it's probably mostly because it could have been better. At least, the comments haven't said "doesn't meet the challenge.)

I find it immensely funny and beautifully ironic.
