This article is spot on, and brings light to how sad and disturbing it is that we have not shown the proper the attention, respect and sympathy for this shooting that we have for so many others like it.
An American Trajedy

"it is hard to escape the conclusion that Oak Creek would have similarly dominated the news cycle if the shooter had been Muslim and the victims had been white churchgoers. Both the quantity and content of the coverage has been clearly shaped by the identities of the shooter and his victims."

"Obama hugged his children a little tighter after Aurora, but his remarks after Oak Creek referred to Sikhs as members of the âbroader American family,â like some distant relatives. Romney unsurprisingly gaffed, referring on Tuesday to âthe people who lost their lives at that sheik temple.â "

"There will also be little attention to the accusation that the military has repeatedly been willing to accept white supremacists in its ranks. Representative Peter King will continue to hold hearings about the threat posed to America by Islamic extremism while refusing to investigate domestic right-wing groups, even though right-wing groups are more worrisome by any systematic measure."

It's disgusting. Same old crap.

I've started to wonder if conflict isn't a basic human need like water and oxygen. History tends to support my idea.

I don't mean conflict. I mean that if the victim isn't some "typical" (usually white) American then we don't care.

ETA: Perhaps recent history does. Read Sex at Dawn and they make a pretty good argument for the fact that that assumption is a bunch of bull based on studying only societies that are all very similar to ours. Go back 10,000 years before agriculture and there is a different picture that could be presented.

Scarcity or at least the perception of scarcity (among other things) creates conflict, not human nature. We don't need it. I vehemently disagree with the notion.

One wonders why there were 100's or 1000's of species of hominids, and now there is only 1.

My guess is that we are a big part of the reason why.

fear.

when white people go crazy and kill non-whites, it doesn't scare whites. its only when whites kill other whites we start to get worried.

Yea that's probably a big part of it. It's sad. Empathy shouldn't have a color or culture. People are people. Tragedy is tragedy.

why shouldn't it?

as much as we don't want to admit we are animals with instinctual habits, we still are, and relate to our own breeds. Yes we have the ability to reason, but reason isn't enough overcome those instincts all the time.
