I'm sure this has been covered before, but I have a sony f717, and I have heard that it is good to have a filter kit for better color and protection of the lens. Here are my questions.I have heard that some people keep the UV filter on thier camera at all times.

1. Does this also apply to the polarized filter as well?
2. Should you use both at the same time?
3. Are the cheap kits they sell on EBAYLike this worth the money, or are they rubbish?

Any other knowlege on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

I find the circular polariser very helpful outside on a nice sunny day to bring out the sky. Usually this alone may cost about $20.00.

At $20.00 you can't go wrong with some protection of a UV filter for your lens.

There are dozens of tutorials about polarizers on the net. Try a Google search and you'll find all you need to know.

DO NOT buy these cheap filter sets!!!!! Please learn from my stupidity, I bought a cheap set like this and the polorizer was not circular. You need circular for cameras with auto focus and most if not all digital cameras. Well, it didn't work and I had to go out and buy a circular polarizer for about $50. If the deal sounds to good to be true, it probably is!

Polarizers are great when properly used. But DON'T leave one on your camera all the time, it cuts down on the amount of light and makes your exposures slower, adding the risk of camera shake or noise in low light conditions. It only serves a purpose in specific conditions. As coolhar said, look for a good tutorial.

Note: You do not, in fact, need a circular polarizer on the F 717. For the details see this thread.
