I have the D7000 waiting for me when I get back up to my grandfathers house this week Friday!!! (wooohooooo!!!! lol)

Here is my question...

I know that there are two SD card ports to save photos with... I was thinking about doing a "RAW" on one and "JPEG" on the other so I can just work with the RAWs and have the JPEG as a back up... Say I win a ribbon or someone asks for an approval... If I entered an edited version of the RAW image as my challenge entry could I submit the JPEG formatted image of the same image as my proof of validation?

Geez I hope that makes sense... Lol.

Totally unofficial opinion, but I would say no.

My intuition would be yes and no.

Yes, because it's an original hypothetically.
No, because your edits upon the RAW may not be possible on the JPEG. Say your JPEG settings were high for contrast, saturation, sharpening and you were set at +1 for exp comp.
The chances of you using that as a source and achieving a low contrast, low sharpness shot (a la vintage) may be impossible.
If you have the raw, there's no reason not to dump it into the folder for the challenge. I make a folder for every challenge, then I put possible RAWS in one folder, then possible .psd's in another, then the final jpeg. Since your RAW never changes, it's silly to risk things.

agree with spiritualspatula here, but i would go a little further and say definite no, with the exception, obviously, of minimal editing challenges.

i had a recent validation where i needed precise steps to provide the sc as they were attempting to recreate a specific feature of the image that was questionable. they need to start with the raw and work from there, unless you start from the jpg for your edits, which is unlikely :)

ETA: is there a way to save raw to both? i'm sure it would slow down your shooting speed but if that were possible you could simply format one card after each shoot once you've got the files downloaded safely.

I have submitted jpeg versions in the past instead of the raw that i edited from and was validated just fine. As long as it is an untouched original jpeg you are good.

ETA - I always saved both versions though when I shot RaW+jpeg. I now only shoot raw.

Actually this question just came up a couple weeks ago... my opinion then, and now, is that you would be OK *most* of the time, but as Derek posted, if the edits you did to the RAW would not be possible on the JPEG, such as recovering highlights, for example, then you might find yourself in a pickle.
The only reason to use the JPEG and not the RAW for validation is the upload time, and given the risk, it's nowhere near worth it.

So much complications... I think I will just shoot RAW+RAW. Lol. I was hoping to save memory card space on one but I don't like pickles (especially sweet ones..) Lol.

Thanks everyone. :)

I can't wait to get my hands on my new camera! :D

I asked the same question:

----- Original Message (DPC:#####) -----

If I shoot in raw+jpeg, can I submit one image for the contest and keep the other as the original for verification?

Either one will suffice as an original, so long as the files are not at all altered by the software you use to download the image or edit it.

If you "submit" one of the images you take, it's only a copy. You'll still have both the RAW and JPEG versions of your original image.

Hope that helps! If not, let us know.
