So, I know this should be on the "Get Satisfaction" website but I'm not seeing much activity there so if I get enough response here I will move it over to there as an official suggestion.

Everyone seems to be complaining lately about the low number of entries and votes. I have to admit it can't be ignored anymore it seems things have really taken a nose dive lately. So how to websites promote themselves these days, Facebook and twitter. Namely Facebook, I really think we need to have an Official DPC Facebook page. If we had a page that we could all get on and like. And have weekly posts linked to our pages our friends and friends of friends would see this site and get on it out of curiosity.

Here are a few questions and suggestions for starting up something like this that I have, feel free to add to this list as well as sign your name to this petition by commenting with a +1

1. Who would head up the facebook page? I would be willing to help but don't know enough about these sorts of things to do much with it.
2. It there a way to automatically link weekly updates we get in our email and challenge winners to the facebook page?
3. My three suggestions as far as what to put on the site are: Announcements of the challenges and an invitation for others to join, announcement of the winners with the photos displayed on the facebook page, and any other announcements covered in the weekly updated we get by email.

I'm sure there are many technical details to something like this that I am not aware of. But I want to do something to help this site since it has done so much for me. This is the one thing I can think of that may help.

Sounds like a good idea.

i like the idea.

i think one would need to manually update with the winners and challenges announcements. you could crowd source the effort with some volunteers.

Although I've never been on Facebook and I have big issues with it, that does sound like a good plan to get more people here. We must not forget though that Facebook works because everyone's a winner and the louder we shout the better the echo (that's all it is) it doesn't work like that here but if it gets the numbers up.....

Just added my 'like' to that page. Yes, it would be good to get it rolling.

It doesn't look like there is much activity though.

It's a good idea that should work as long as someone is driving it.

Apparently nobody is; look at the "stats" in the listing:

"Launched in 2002, To date, 149,862 users have submitted 279,901 photographs to 1593 challenges. 377,055 photographs have been submitted to 4,783 portfolios."

Our image ID numbers are well over a million now...

do we know who created it? there is only one image shown in the profile.

if its going to work, it needs to be updated, all the time with the results and new challenges.

Actually, what would generate interest is something more active than just a 'like' button - People get bored with that and forget about it quickly.

For example, when you paste a BBC News URL into facebook, it parses the first paragraph and posts a thumbnail you can change.

So for DPC stuff, if you link to a photo, it could parse this and display it in a nice facebook-friendly format, allowing you to add your own comments. like;

Hey guys, check out my ribbon winning entry at this week's DPC challenge.

This is exactly what I was thinking if we had someone posting the winners each week in a facebook friendly format. Then people could comment, like and re post to their homepages. Generating traffic to the facebook site and then hopefully to the DPC site or even just click on the photos and it would take a person looking at them to the DPC site. I don't know how all this stuff works though.

It shouldn't be just the winners. Or I'd never get to share my photos ;)

By the way
+1
is for google+.

It should be type
Like
if you want to sign the petition.

i think the facebook page should be updated to show the winners at rollover while announcing the new challenge.

we should also do as JH suggest when people post their own images.

100% agree. I think both features are "must have". Sorry if that wasn't clear.

For those that want to, you can post photos to the current facebook page. (don't forget to wait until the challenge is over) You can then share the post on your timeline, allowing others to see the photo as being involved with dpc.

Is it an official DPC facebook page. I know there are unofficial ones but I really want one officially associated with this site. Do we know, is the one that was listed earlier an official site?

Okay so it seems like it's an official page, so we all need to get on there and like it. Also we need to figure out how to post challenge results on it. Still looking for someone who knows a little bit about how this stuff works.

Not saying it isn't but just looking for ways to get more people to the site.

I just did some updates to the page, please everyone check it out and lets see how many likes we can get. I think the goal for most community pages is 300 I don't know what that does but I think we should try to get as many as possible. So like and comment away!!!

Facebook link

I just looked at the page and it doesn't seem to post the things I did properly, what a waste of time, we really need to figure out what we need to to to get things looking right. The only way to see my posts properly is to click on them, no one is going to do that. It just shows my photo and that I made a comment, none of the links I did show unless you click on them, can anyone tell me why?

I think it has to be an admin post for it to show it properly. That said if you share your photo on your own timeline it shows up normal size there. So people will see your photo (or any photo you choose to share such as winners) on your own timeline, and can choose to click on the DPC page to see more about it.

I just tested something. If you want to post the winners of challenges on your own timeline, facebook creates a thumbnail and description of dpc challenge if you paste the URL of a photo into your status. Example : //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=1026231

But I know for me if someone posts too much of something I am not very interested in them I filter their posts to "only important" so that they rarely if ever show up anymore...

EDIT : looks like you were already doing that but with the challenge_id URL :) It just has to be on your main timeline to show up properly, which is really all that matters in my opinion since the goal is to get new people to join, not for current members to see what they already see on the main site.

Yes, but how many people are going to actually do this? It would be much easier for the administrators to post what I just posted so it shows up properly and then people can comment or link it to their sites as it pops up.
