That would have to include pinholes as well. Not a bad idea, though. |

Arguably not a portrait. At least not in the classic sense of the word. |
If you want variety in challenges, don't go about saying things like this... |
Creativity in the CREATION of the challenges... But if a photographic term is used, then follow what that term means.
If I propose a shallow DOF challenge, and I get photos with sharp everything? Yeah. Boom. DNMC, sorry boss. If I ask for a portrait, and I get environmental shots that happen to include a model who's face is nearly invisible? Dude, that's not even arguably CLOSE to a portrait.
ETA:
I think we're just using different definitions of creative... For you it seems to mean rule breaker, for me it means staying within the rules, but in unexpected ways. That's all. And I tend to use words rather precisely, so if I say portrait, you can darn well bet I didn't mean full body environmental shot.

Enough of these wide open challenges...how about the "UWA lens on a full frame camera, at 1830H +/- 30 minutes and within 10 kilometers of 38 U 476822 492611 (WGS84)" challenge. |

If the challenge was "portrait but NOT environmental or full body", I'm all with you. Otherwise it's a portrait that you can certainly vote lower because you don't think there's enough emphasis on the face, but to say, "this is not a portrait" is just haughty verbage. I see a picture of a person supported by the ambiance of the surroundings and without secondary subjects. To me, that meets the general definition of a portrait.
The point is not to argue about the definition, but to say that if we go about with such talk then don't complain when a "shallow DOF portrait" challenge is 50 variations of someone's face with the eyes sharp and nothing else. |

Lose the location, and I'd be all in... (12-24 on a 5D counts right? ;) ).. |

I might vote highly for a pic with only the mouth in focus, or perhaps the ear only. It's just a matter of creativity, that's exactly what I'm talking about - if you want to show me eyes only, at least go with some props, unique looks, makeup, etc....
My point is that while the gross effect would be similar images, if executed well that makes voting a real pleasure for me, because then I'm able to really see who did the best with their work, not just who managed to choose the best subject.
*shrug* Just my opinion for sure. |

How about just their fingernails in focus?

Dang, that's impressive!
I really was trying to find something impossible, and I feel your trade of rat for horse is fair enough.
Well done. :) |
