Does anybody use MSN 9 dial up accelerator?
I just downloaded it today and used it on Level 4 to start voting on the serendipity challenge and I had to quit! Didn't vote on any. The compression artifacts were awful! Switched back to Level 1, which is supposed to load the text fast but not compress the photos, and tried to view the same photos again. They were still really showing compression.!? Does this make any sense to anyone? Is it a cookie problem, once it loads it saves it for faster loading for the next time you view it? If I delete the cookies and go back to Level l, will I be able to view them like they're supposed to look?
It's always something....big sigh...stupid dial-up connections. |

| It's probably because your browser has cached the images. It likely has nothing to do with cookies. Make sure you delete all cached files. This can be done using the Tools - Internet Options then the Delete Files button. |

Cached files would be the temporary files, right? I always get it confused. Thanks, I'll try that.
I'm wondering if anyone has been loading and voting with the accelerator. It really makes a big difference! |

Oh, please don't use a dialup accelerator to vote!! Yes, you can speed up downloads a bit by compressing text, but when voting you are downloading almost pure graphics, so there's really no advantage to just compressing the text. If you compress graphics at all with the accelerator, you will ruin the photos; the most detailed ones will suffer the most.

Okay, just deleted the temporary files and looked at the same photos again with Level 1. Hooray, the quality is back. Unbelievable difference! If I had just stumbled onto this site with Level 4, I'd vote everybody 2's or less!
I agree! Oh, please don't use a dialup accelerator to vote!!

Do you know how this is done in Mozilla? |

There was an episode of The Screen Savers on techtv today that dealt with this issue and they basically said that websites look pretty bad when using them, especially graphics.
Screen Savers article about the test.

Even set on "medium" you are probably compressing graphics as much as 1/2 their oiginal size. Many photogs here (all of the best, I would venture to say) go to great pains to minimize the effects of compression. Taking and squashing the images again will introduce subtle changes, such as banding/blotching in sky areas, "flies" in smooth areas around detail, muddied detail, etc.
None of these are "jump out at you" defects, but perceptually they hit the very best images the hardest.
Again, I urge folks not to use a dialup accelerator for graphics compression when voting. Show respect for the hard work that all of the wonderful photographers here at DPC have put into their submissions.

I use JoiExpress accelerator - but no compression on graphics. It does load a lot of pages faster even tho'I keep my graphic quality high. When you're limited to dialup, ya just have to do the best you can with what you have. My mom has dialup as well and says my computer is MUCH faster than hers - and my processor is an older slower one!
I rarely see pixelated images on dpchallenge - but get comments occasionally on some of my submissions that they're pixelated, so I think that maybe a few people are using compression when they vote!
