That's a gem of a post.
I can still remember that it's the strap you had to look out for, before you even get whiskers. That's been along time ago.

Was it "strap", or "strop"? I remember my grandfather pronouncing it with a short "o" sound. But then he was from Germany, so perhaps it is the German version...

I think you are right. I have heard it both ways. My brother didn't do so well with his first attempt at straight razor shaving when he was around 5 or 6, but he did miss his jugular vein.

I can so relate to this.

I well remember using my dad's straight razor and nicking myself in the neck area. Being young and stupid I thought it would be a great idea to spread the trickle of blood all over my face, neck and had some on my hands when who should walk into the room but my mother.

After the screaming and shrieking subsided, and the realization by my mother that I was not the victim of a slasher, I got a quick cuff on the side of the head and the following threat all of us can relate to: "You wait till your father gets home".

I never did that again.

LOL, how many of us have had bits of toilet paper stuck on our shaving cuts??

I saw this show on TV about an old style top class barber shop that offered razor shaves. One thing they always did was to apply a hot washcloth to the face for a little while to 'open' the pores to help lessen the redness after shaving.

Re the challenge suggestion, I can see how this might make a gory kind of challenge.
I remember the toilet paper thing too. It's embarrassing if you forget about it being there all day.
This is just a bump for those who missed this thread.

DPC has no place for joke accounts. I am deeply offended.

I would like to thank Slippy for resurrecting this thread, since I missed it on the first go round. Priceless!
