I was at an event last week, and noticed a woman who had a really snazzy diffuser for her flash. It appeared to be velcroed to the flash so it could be pointed upwards, and it was kinda shaped like a softbox on top of the flash. It was probably 5 inches square; kinda looked like the flash was wearing a giant, enclosed square hat.

I've been trying to identify something similar online, but I have come up empty so far. I'm sure I could easily construct something similar, but I'd rather have something that doesn't look crappy (which is exactly what would happen if I constructed it!).

Was it something Lumiquest makes?

I recently got their Softbox for my 550EX, but haven't played with it much. Unlike the Sto-Fen OmniBounce, this actually enlarges the size of the light source (via diffusion), so theoretically the results should be different...

Micro Apollo Light Modifier

Something like this? I have one and it works quite well. Requires no brackets. But it's sort of funny looking. :-)

I've got the Lumiquest Ultrasoft. It does work, shadows are noticably better and photo's don't get that flash look.
The downside is that you need a very powerful flash, because the thing eats several stops of light, depending on the distance.(that is if you don't want to compensate with a wider aperture and higher ISO)

You can attach it to your flash with velcro stickers, but also with a cinch strap (loose rubber-backed no sticker velcro).

It is probably easy to make yourself.

Yep, that's the kind of stuff I was looking for! The Lumiquest site has exactly the kind of doo-dad I was looking for -- they call it the MidiBouncer. The Micro Apollo Light Modifier looks interesting, too! I'll have to study up on these.

Thanx!
