After who knows how many failed attempts at capturing fireworks, I think I finally got the hang of it. I was so excited at how well so many of them turned out that I posted a ton of them on my FB page. Hope you like 'em!

Edit to add that in some of the images you can also see fireworks from Culver City near the horizon, next to the flare column.

They are beauties, and the location is very good. Gives perspective to the display.

Nice work, and I second Robert's request for settings; but this year I can not see a firework shot without thinking of my poor friend who took a special trip to shoot the San Diego fireworks show. Turned out to be the firework, non plural.

Heh! I read about that. The whole show lasted 5 seconds.

edit: double post. I don't know why my mouse is suddenly double clicking on a single click.

nice. i wasn't thrilled with mine from the other night, crappy location and it was windy although it helped create some nice trails on some. plus these airplanes get flying through my shot leaving white lines.

Great shots tanguera! Love the colorful reflections in the water!

I took some on the 4th as well, it might be inappropriate to post my picture in a thread started by someone else, but if its ok I can post one here!

ETA:
I guess I will post, its a composite of 3 shots, so not a challenge legal picture.

Technicals: each frame at f/11, 30 sec, ISO 400 with a 70-300mm lens.

@ patches - I think 23 is also my favorite. Very different from the regular bursts. I think it looks like the Tree of Souls in Avatar :-)

For FB-phobes, the link is to the photo album. I don't think you have to be on facebook to see the photos. Let me know if this is not the case, and I'll post a few more here. There are a couple of photos on my Flickr page as well.

@ Mike (and Bear) - you were actually quite close! Settings were f16-20, ISO ±100 (on Nikon 200 is the lowest setting, then they have -0.5, etc), and shutter between 2-8 seconds, in bulb mode, with an off-camera shutter trigger, and of course, a tripod. The secret was more in the timing. Not only when to start, but also when stop the shutter. I would say at least half of my images turned out incredibly well, and the rest were great technically but not as interesting "artistically". Also, I think location made all the difference. We actually had set up just a few hundred yards from the barge itself on the jetty (and it would have been incredible to capture the bursts from that pov), so close, we could have waded to it. But 15 minutes before the show, the cops drove up and down the jetty telling everyone they had to move to either the bridge or the other end of the jetty, past the barge. Decided the bridge would be the far more picturesque choice, because the creek would provide a reflection (the wind was ruffling the surface so they wouldn't be "mirror" images - which would have been incredible). Stationed myself smack in the middle of it and voila.

We were also facing towards the city which had the night glow over it. I decided to enhance that in the processing rather than darken the sky - I think it makes the images more interesting.

ETA - Vikas, great shot. Makes it look like fireworks were going up all over the city.
