All of the latest discounts (Topaz and otherwise) are listed here.
And true, you want to use plug-ins sparingly, especially for the challenges. For other creative or illustrative purposes though, anything goes ΓΆ€“ so long as you avoid garish.

Curious as to how the Topaz black and white compares to Silver Efex. The black and white is less expensive then the Silver Efex, but I have downloaded the free trial of Silver Efex, and I LOVE that program. Any experience with Topaz Black and White?

I have both and prefer Silver Efex. The Topaz Product is good, however. Why not just try the free trial of the Topaz B/W product?

Good point, Spiff, trials are available for most every product.
Info on the two options discussed above:

Here's my 2 cents:
I have both Nik and Topaz (all of both)
I use nik more often than Topaz. I think Topaz noise reduction is by far better than nik, I think Nik Silver Effects is by far better than Topaz, I think Nik color color effects pro is better than any Topaz settins, Topaz Remask is the MOST AWESOME PROGRAM I've ever used, but you only use it to cut out subjects. Nik's detail extractor is unmatched (it's in the color effects pro bundle)
Nik had the ability to add or take away the effect and to diff degrees with in the programs, Topaz you need to apply then open back to PS and do a layer mask to reduce the effect...
Sooo IF I could only have one nik or topaz I guess it'd have to be nik... Again though, the whole shootin' match is 500.00 as opossed to Topaz @ around 300... I had Topaz first and was totaly happy UNTIL I tried out nik...

That's not the case anymore. Check the "local adjustments" panel in some of the recent Topaz versions. You can selectively brush out the effect. I do find it easier to do that with a duplicate layer and masking in my main editor, however.

| I have used Topaz Labs DeNoise on and off and recently B&W effects. I am very happy with the results especially when I make an effort to subtly adjust and play with all the sliders/options. Can;t go wrong for the price. Especially now with the specials. |

Interesting conversation. I use DENOISE, ADJUST, DETAIL (all latest versions) and also have REMASK and INFOCUS (rarely use these). I also have the photoFXLab. There are a lot of nice features to the FX front end that don't require any other plug-ins, but most features and presets are generated from the plugins you do have. One big drawback that I found that causes me to use the FXlab as a plug-in rather than a standalone application is it won't open Canon RAW files as a standalone while it does as a plug-in. (I don't know about other RAW files as I only have Canon) This is a huge drawback in my opinion. As a plug-in I can use my normal workflow and get what I want out of all the plug-ins when I want it and I find I rarely use the actual FXLab as a plug-in since all the others are there in the same drop-down. Every time I want to use the FXLab and open it by itself I always close as soon as I see all my RAW files grayed out. I find the extra steps of creating a jpg or tif first just to use the FXLab as a standalone too cumbersome in my current workflow.
