What's your price range?
That will decide whether you get a D-SLR, or a compact... |

Your first stop should be //www.dpreview.com/ for cameras.
As you can see, I have a 10D. Expensive, and even more expensive lenses. But you get superb image quality AND resolution.
You might want to check out the 300D / Rebel if you want a D-SLR

A lot depends on how you are going to use it. I went with a Sony F828 because it has a zoom lens with a large range. For me this was important because I donĂ¢€™t want to be changing lens all the time. I also like the fact that it goes very wide angle, the equivalent of 28mm for a 35mm camera. There are a lot of other small features that are important to me, turns on fast, has a mechanical zoom that sort of thing. For me the electronic viewfinder works very well, I always have the histogram display up which is a very handy thing to be able to see while framing a shot.
In time I want a SLR with a full sized imaging chip, but I donĂ¢€™t want to pay $8000 for it. If money were no object I would buy a Cannon 1Ds. If I thought the price of the 1Ds would not come down I would probably buy one now, but clearly the price will come down. So that was also part of my decision, I donĂ¢€™t expect the Sony to keep me happy for much more then 2 years. Buy that time I am expecting the available cameras to be a generation beyond what is out there now.
In the end the choice has to be tailored to your needs more then how others feel about their cameras.

They have a huge database of images from given cameras

One thing though...
Don't think about it for too long - You'll never end up buying anything!!
If you look at "what's around the corner" all the time, you'll be looking for years. Waiting for 11.1MPixels, waiting for 10 frames /sec...
yeah, sure, you'kll get those specs for about $4000 in a couple of years... But it's not worth the wait!!
Take the plunge!!! I can't stress that enough. I was ummm'ing and ahhh'ing about my 10D, but then i just went and bought it.
Really spend the extra cash on a D-SLR now. get the EOS 300D... it comes with a lens as well. All the Canon EOS cameras use the same lenses, so you CAN upgrade to a 10D or a 1Ds later.
By that stage, you'll have a few lenses, and you'll be enjoying it heaps.
I beleive there's a Nike slogan somewhere here....
