i just got the following email from a friend of mine:

Well, another new scam ... I may be done with Craigslist ... give me some suggestions ...

I sent someone a bobblehead and agreed to be paid through paypal ... today, the guy just sent me pictures of an old broken bobblehead that is not what I sent him ... he wrote me a nasty email and started a dispute with paypal ... looks like I'm out the $20 plus what I paid to ship it ..

the only thing i can think of is to fight the dispute and ask whether this guy has a track record of disputing stuff. other than that, if you're going to use craigslist, include a photo with a shipping document to let people know what it looked like going in the box. either that or only deal local.

what do ya'll think? any similar experiences?

local only...in a safe place...cash...never alone...well armed...never at home...if its too good to be true, it isn't...if it doesn't look right, leave...

Ditto. I've done a good deal local craigslist, but that's it. I've traded many items on forums, both mail and in person and never had an issue, but craigslist I do in person without question.

I've only ever done deals through local sites, including the buy/sell section of a very specialized local site when I sold my horse gear. Met the buyer in a semi-private place with another person, or in a public place, made sure they saw everything, counted the money there in front of them (be careful when and where you're doing so, I was in a doughnut shop at the time - within range of a security cam). Sucks that your friend got ripped off, thank gawd it was for only $20.

hey, at least your friend didn't go meet the guy and get a gun shoved in their face while they got robbed.

I have used craigslist only for local trades of music gear. I have only sold something for cash once, 250$ for an amp and I was in the area so I agreed to meet where a kid worked, at a plumbing supply showroom. He was selling a toilet and trying out and buying my amp at the same time.

One time I agreed to trade guitars, and to meet at a Dunkin Donuts, and the guy with the guitar I wanted rode in with it on a motorcycle. Too funny.
I ended up trading that very guitar for the T3 rebel I use now. In front of a Best Buy. The camera was brand new- and he through in some SD cards- I should have just chucked them- but-you guessed it- sketchy nude pictures of the guys wife. I ended up chucking the cards and sanitizing myself and all the equipment.

It could have been worse:

Here in Baltimore, we have thugs that place car ads, and when people come with cash, they rob them at gunpoint. One couple (of buyers) brought their own gun with them. She ended up firing into the air. The VICTIM ended up in jail on $35,000 bail.

Oh, That stinks. My rule with craigslist seems to be pretty much in line with everyone else. Local pick-up, cash, and meet in a public place. Seems as though the scammers really take advantage of craigslist since it is not as regulated as some other sites.
Good luck to your friend.

Having a gun shoved in your face.....is that a common thing in the US? A coworker who lives in Vermont told me that "oh you should always assume a person is armed"

crazy

I wouldn't call it 'common', but it does happen sometimes.

Be careful of where you meet, some places that you would think of as safe and public are anything but safe. I know of at least one guy who met in the middle of the day with a "buyer" at an address in a good neighborhood. The "buyer" was waiting in front of a house and once the seller identified himself, the "buyer's" accomplice popped out from behind a bush with a shotgun and robbed the seller of his merchandise, wallet and car. There were no witnesses, everyone was at work.

The lady was chasing after the thieves shooting into the air. I'm all for using firearms in self defense, but shooting wildly into the air is both stupid and terribly dangerous.

True. The rule is, you fire 3 warning shotsâ€Â¦in their back! :-)

Once the threat to yourself and/or others is over (e.g. the robber drops his gun and runs away), it's not self defense.
