Haven't had time to vote the whole challenge, but have made a start. Finding it hard to understand the low votes reported in this thread. 46% voted, average score given 6.00.

I'm blaming Wendy, she told me to enter this one, I wanted to enter another one ;)
06/04/2012 06:37:37 AM · #54
I blame Anita! She told me to enter the other one, and I ignored her.

Somehow that must be her fault!! :P

Oh, I forgot to add

5.4

Sorry but the last part of that sentence is wrong. Abstracts can totally be recognizable!

No, but challenge descriptions on DPC are written by one person and that description is particularly bad. It in no way reflects the wider definition of 'Abstract, either on DPC generally or, and this is probably quite important, in the 100 years and more of photographic and art history. I'd ignore that Abstract III description, really, if i were you.

This is the Black & White Abstract challenge description: 'N/A'

That's more than enough information i'd say.

Scores bobbing about. 5 votes = 5.00 10 votes = 5.8 15 votes = 5.2 going to be one of those weeks.

BTW, all this discussion about what is and isn't abstract should have been in a pre-voting thread. When it comes in a score thread, it can be considered an attempt to influence the voting. I've seen SC admonishment about this before.

You have rated 133 of 133 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 3 images (2%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 4.8421.

I think this is my lowest average cast... and I gave 19 votes over 7!

Karen is quite right!
I like the way this sums it all up.
//www.naturephotographers.net/articles0209/dw0209-1.html
Quote" Abstraction is really about learning to see the basic visual building blocks within your subject (line and shape, form and colour) and then arranging these components in pure design. Generally such an exercise will present the subject in an unusual way, and most often in "stripped down" form, often leaving the subject unrecognizable. But whether we still can or cannot recognize the subject is a moot point and neither negates nor validates the work as an abstract"

Going back to the opening quote, "If it is recognizable as an object – it is not an abstract," if the photographer literally meant that if viewers can identify what the subject is, then it is not an abstract, then he misunderstands the concept of abstraction. But if he meant that presenting the object as a recognizable "whole" means we haven’t created an abstract, I would agree"Unquote

I DNMC!

Went to bed at 5 @ 5
Puppy me woke me up at 5:30 and score was a nice 5.8750 at 5:10, then 5.6 @ 5:30 (Have to update on the iPhone when taking the dogs out, right?)

Really woke up to a 5.8571 and then it went to a 5.9333 at 15 votes...

Then a pair of 5s again (this voting is so wonky...) and I'm at 5.8235.

Hmmm.... didn't see this coming. Must reflect some DNMC votes. Looks abstract to me, but what do I know? (Evidently nothing.)

I think the definition of abstract is abstract itself. Defined yet unrecognizable...

I think unrecognizable works if it's reduced to strong patterns and shapes.
