@ Matt, I don't know about the D3, but the D7000 has a focusing aid in the heads up of the viewfinder. It's two arrows and a dot. When you get the dot, it's focused on the area that is chosen in the focus area selected in the frame. It's not as fast as AF, but it will give you a reference point.
It's also good for setting the diopter adjustment. That adjustment is critical when using manual focus lenses. I used to manual focus beyond the desired point almost every time, until I figured that one out.
Live view can be useful for focusing manually too, if nothing is moving. You can zoom in on a spot in the frame to focus. I use that for astrophotography when using telescopes and it helps a lot.

Thanks Waddy, I do have and use, but not rely totally on those indicators. I have my diopter adjusted properly on both of my Cameras to make sure that what I have in focus is really what is in focus. Sometimes they get real twitchy on real Shallow DOF so I decide when to fire. Thanks though. I got real gutsy and used mine on a paid assignment for the paper tonight. Really went back to the roots. When I get done submitting I'll post a couple here from the night.

Saturday.
ETA, Bling, or glasses rims with a highlight or sparkle are generally pretty good places to use for focusing if the light is very low. If things are pretty stable, focus on the bright item, then move yourself in or out about the estimated difference in range from the highlight to the chosen focus spot, i/e for a side view portrait, focus on the nearest corner of the glasses, then physically move about an inch closer to be focused exactly on the nearest eye.

So I went away on vacation. And with all the fancy lenses I own, I tried to shoot nearly all our photos with the MF lenses. I shot a whole lot less photos while on vacation and yet have more that will end up in print for the albums.
