For the last few months I have had a problem with the files that I upload to DPC being darker (or possibly a white balance shift) than the same file viewed in my editor (Photoshop Elements 10). Has anyone else had this problem? I have the file color space set to sRGB. Are there other settings to be concerned with? It seems like the problem started when the new uploader was implemented, but this may be my imagination.

Yes ... I thought I was crazy... I have a calibrated monitor, that hubs bought me it's a photographers monitor you see the same color or image from anyside, paid $$$ for it and is amazeing when I print at the lab the pix look just like on my screen but to tell you anymore... I know SQUAT about computor stuff he knows all.

I've seen color change and dark/light change... even taken pix's down etc... Don't know what or why

My guess is that your color space isn't really sRGB (or at least the color space of your exported file doesn't match the profile you're viewing in Elements). I've got an entry submitted with the new uploader that is absolutely identical to the photo on my computer.

I was having problems with this on my Mac using Aperture. What solved it for me was just re-installing the program. Drove me freakin' batty.

If all of the settings are sRGB, how would I check to see if the file color space is really sRGB? Can SC check my last submission (Green Macro) to determine the embedded color space? And can the color space be changed/set as part of the PSE "Save for Web" function?

don't use a save for web function then?

I just do a save as a jpg image in the right pixel constraints.
Some of my images appear darker due to using different monitors in different lighting conditions, so i try to upload with enough time to check it out on my laptop, desktop, phone/tablet and ideally at work to make sure it looks good all around.
I've pulled several images down and bumped the brightness or played with contrast after doing this once I started getting feedback on several consecutive images that they were too dark (looked great in editor program though).

So yeah, just save as a jpeg, if there's a 'save for web' functionality it may do more than just size/type formatting - it may alter the rgb palette in some way.

I always first save the file as a jpg at 72ppi and 800 pixels max. If the file size is greater than 300kb, I then use the Save for Web to reduce the file size. Question - how would I reduce the file size otherwise?

I am going to double check the Save for Web parameters this evening to see if color space choice is an option.

I appreciate everyone's input!

The SaveAs JPEG dialog has a quality setting -- lowering that slightly will make the file smaller.

in photoshop use a quality setting of about 7.
in paintshop pro i do 800x600ish usually and save as jpg. no quality quantifier and it's usually 100k

Duh! (smacking self on the forehead) I knew that. I will go that route and compare my upload file to the original and see if that corrects my issue.

I use PSE9. These are the ways I know you can change the color space in PSE. Through the Edit menu, using the Save As command and using the Save for web Command.

Under the edit menu there is a color settings command. (You mentioned this) This will allow you to change your color settings to always be sRGB if that is what you want. You can change it to always optimize the file for printing using the AdobeRGB color settings, or you can ask it to allow you to choose on each file.

Using Save As, make sure the check box in the file window for save with ICC Profile using AdobeRGB is unchecked so you will have SRGB color space.

Using Save for web strips all exif data from the file but it saves the colors for viewing on the internet using sRGB color space.

I have not had any color problems uploading to DPC after resizing and using the save for web command. Maybe check your computer color settings to make sure you are viewing images using sRGB as the default? Hope that helps.

One way to check is to open the mage with your browser while it is still on your hard drive, before uploading, and compare that with the view in the image editor. Then upload it and compare the local and uploaded mages in side-by-side browser windows -- that should locate the stage at which the shift (if any) is happening.
