Am I allowed to directly link to images inside my DPC portfolio from outside the site? Also, can I upload, say, a computer-generated picture or a scanned picture and link to it from outside the site?

I dont see anywhere that states that you cant and as the 10mb personal portfolio comes with the price of membership I'd say it was probably ok to do so.

Drew and Langdon have asked before that people don't use DPC to host images for other purposes, especially if they will be posted on high-traffic sites, due to bandwidth costs.

If it stated anywhere on the site? New people join all the time and if that's the policy then they wouldnt know about past forum threads or such.

I don't think it's a written rule, I just remember them asking politely :)

Thanks for the information. I was unsure because, although I try to keep relatively aware of the rules, there are always a few I forget about.
My reason for wanting to post a non-photography image was related to a small question / answer site I visit sometimes. Certain questions people ask can be answered much more easily with a diagram or illustration than they can with words.
As far as site traffic is concerned, there are approximately 1-4 new questions added on the site per section per day. If I placed a DPC link in an answer then it would only receive minimal attention and only really be of use to the person who asked the question in the first place. I'll try to avoid attracting crowds of unwanted visitors to DPC, of course.

The site's Terms of Use prohibit this, as this type of use can create a heavy draw on the site's bandwidth.
EDIT: I see someone beat me to it. ;-)

So far as TYPE of image, you can use your portfolio space for any (legal) images your have; scans, digital art, whatever.
I beleieve what D+L want to avoid is HOSTING the IMAGE on DPC; that would involve having an outside web page which referenced the image at the DPC site in order to display it.**
If you put the image in your portfolio, and put whatever the person viewing the page needs to know in the photographer's comments area, I think there is nothing at all wrong with sending the people to that PAGE in your portfolio; you could even put a link on your own page which links to the photo's PAGE at DPC, just not directly to the image.
This opinion subject to revision by the site admins ....
**If you need a site to host images, I recommend //pbase.com |

This is my understanding as well... Drew and Langdon are not online, though, and have the right to change my mind when they return! ;-)
