Hint: But a key feature of the item this is used with is that parts of it can vibrate.

It's a sewing thimble with a guard, for clumsy people like me.
Pet water dish for a sub-mini sized dog?

nossir.

Hint: this device is not used with a trombone.
05/21/2012 08:58:50 PM · #2785
It is used to change the sounds of a trumpet or other horn.

Wrong instrument, David.
Further hint: Notice that the metal cup is scratched...

In fact, it has nothing to do with the brass section.

Yup, David has it right.. It's a Cello Endpin rest. It's designed to stop the Endpin from slipping on surfaces and/or to protect the floor from damage by the pin. Sometimes the pin will just stay in place without one, but there is always the risk with my cello, which has a rather blunt endpin, that it will "scoot out" from under me while I am in the middle of playing, which is disconcerting, to say the least. This is a very basic one I got when I started playing the cello a few years ago.
